Differing Views on Guy/Girl Relationships - blog*spot

Introduction:
In this post we will be taking a deeper look at the ?relationship models? generally adopted by Christians today. However, in retrospect, let me remind you that throughout Scripture we are given a catalyst with which we are to shape our lives: Jesus Christ, the man who demonstrated what a relationship is all about. We mentioned before that cultivating a relationship is a human need --a desire created by God, and only fulfilled by God. True? Yes, but then how often are we found looking beyond Him to people/relationships for what seems to be a void in our life? Many of us have had epic failures when it comes to relationship whether it is with God, people or family. But take courage: this is a simple reassurance of our fallen nature and evidence that we need someone who can and will love us despite our sin. The book of Ecclesiastes reminds us that all is vanity except when we live in the way God designed us to live.

?Q. There are many Christian views regarding guy/girl relationships. Can you define these different viewpoints for us?

Here is a list of ?relationship models? reflecting differing viewpoints on relationship statuses. Although these definitions are not all-inclusive, it will give you the mainstream perspective on common Christian viewpoints.

Friendship:

?????? General: acquaintance level/casual conversation level

?????? ?Family?: older/younger friendships, sibling style relationship

?????? Deep: intimate level of conversation and more frequent interaction via networking and in person. Common beliefs, goals and dreams are shared.

?????? Best Friend: the closest form of friendship where intimate conversation includes the most vulnerable part of the heart and often sharing ?secrets? and ?struggles? with this individual.

Dating:

?????? Dating: relationship with no particular commitment, just the general idea of getting to know someone.

?????? Dating for status: everyone else has a boy/girlfriend?(peer pressure)

?????? Dating for pleasure: the pursuit of relationship(s) as means of self-pleasure (physical, emotional, sexual), but with no commitment to long-term relationship (and sometimes with no acknowledgement of present/future consequences).

?????? Missionary Dating: using relationship as a means to establish a witness for Christ

?????? Christian Dating: setting various boundaries that might limit certain choices or situations?hopefully both have the same general morals/commitments.

Courtship:

?????? General Courting: pursing a relationship with marriage as the end result.

?????? Conservative Courtship: limited physical, emotional interaction as a means of guarding from hurt until certain foundations are established OR pursing a relationship with the dad first as means to the daughter.

?Q. Does ?conservative? equate Biblical? ?
What first comes to mind when you hear the word, conservative? Legalistic? Old fashion? Restrictive? Biblical? Unfortunately the word conservative has become a clich? as well as a stereotype for certain kinds of people. We tend to categorize Christian beliefs into two sectors: liberal or conservative. Some justify the conservative view as more scripturally based while other claim the views to be dated and legalist.

Let?s define the original meaning of the term ?conservative?: It means, ?to retain?. If we are retaining biblical truths in our lives, then we could be rightly called conservative. However, a lot of so-called ?conservative values? are based on past cultures not primarily Biblical principles. Example: the courtship model has been deemed ?Biblical? and ?conservative? (let me assure you that many principles in the courtship model are Biblical). ?Courtship? was originally a term used for dating in a past culture.

Q. Conservative vs. Liberal Views...which one is correct? ?

Easily put there are two extremes, conservative courtship and pleasure dating. However, we know from experiences and other?s lives that both of these --as well as the varying models resting some-where-in-between these two-- can end in devastating heartache, the ?what-did-I-get-myself-into? question, or perhaps even a ?happily-ever-after?. But what is our guarantee since both extremes have evidence of both bad and good turnout?

Every ?cookie-cutter? view on relationship has been tested and tried, but not a single one has become a working mode for this or any other generation. Why? Because a formula based on culture or experience is not enough for success. We need to take ?relationship building lessons? from God! In His word we are given founding principle on which to base how we live our lives --which apply to guy/girl relationship as well.

I want to encourage you to put away any terminology or cultural ideas that you have about relationships, and instead, think cross-culturally?think about how Christ has pursued a relationship with you. He did not base His relationship with us on culture or experience. He simply did the will of His Father. Any model for relationship that we create that isn?t 100% based on God?s Word is a very dangerous place to be.

Conclusion:
?The tricky business with this subject of guy/girl relationships is that your opinion does not matter nor does mine. In fact, let's face it...an opinion has no validations apart from the Word of God...complications take place when we take our personal application and define it as THE interpretation.? ?What biblical principles are we given in this area? What does the Bible have to say about relationships? Do you know? In our next post we will be looking at relationships from God's perspective. We will be giving you principles that you can apply in any culture and any level of relationships.?

Olympics awash in Twitter, for better or worse

LONDON (AP) ? It's amazing how much trouble can be stirred up in 140 characters or less.

But also how much intimacy, excitement, global scope and, yes, general zaniness. For better and for worse, the 2012 Olympics are being shaped, shaken and indisputably changed by a social media revolution that four years ago in Beijing was in its toddlerhood.

Four days into the games, we've already seen (and this is but a partial list):

?an athletes' Twitter campaign objecting to sponsorship restrictions that went viral under the hashtag "WeDemandChange."

?a television viewers uprising over Olympic broadcaster NBC's decision not to live stream the opening ceremony.

?two athletes kicked out for racist tweets.

?a fan arrested Tuesday after a series of threatening posts, including one in which he vowed to drown a British diver, and another in which he told the athlete he had failed his dead father by not winning.

For Olympics organizers who pride themselves on putting on a carefully choreographed ? obsessively controlled, some would say ? 17-day show, the bursts of Twitter activity are like gamma rays escaping from a solar flare. They're impossible to stop and spellbinding to behold.

"I don't think we would seek to control it, nor could we," said International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams. He said more than 15 million fans are following and participating in the Olympic experience via Twitter and other social media platforms, not to mention a good proportion of the 10,800 athletes. "Used the right way, we embrace social media," he said. "And, if you look at the guidelines, we positively encourage it."

The problem is, it isn't always used that way.

The immediacy and public nature of Twitter and its propensity to induce off-the-cuff irreverence, and sometimes breathtaking ugliness, has added a new and chaotic element to an event where everything from urine samples to sponsors' logos to London traffic is arranged with overcaffeinated attention to detail worthy of a royal wedding.

"Though organizers have spent months touting this as the first social media Summer Games, many of them seem to have been totally unprepared for the huge impact that Twitter has had," said Andy Miah, director of the Creative Futures Institute at the University of the West of Scotland. "I think there was some naivete about the likely role of social media from both participants and from the organizers. Many of them appear to have been wrongfooted."

Twitter has been used in many ways during its brief life ? some very organized and tactical, some more spontaneous and disorderly. It has been a tool of protest and organization for the Occupy Wall Street movement and Arab Spring activists. Yet it has also led to the downfall of click-happy politicians, and the sometimes embarrassing late-night revelations of A-list celebrities.

The social network is now at the fingertips of 140 million users, up from a few million when the Olympics were held in Beijing in 2008. The San Francisco-based company says there have been more than 10 million tweets mentioning the Olympics during the first few days of the games. The exponential jump from four years ago has been driven by the rise of smartphones, now carried by spectators and athletes alike, each watching each other watch each other.

Which of course raises the question: When exuberant, often young athletes are going through the experience of their lives on one hand, and it's unfolding in a deeply controlled environment on the other, how do you make sure everyone gets what they need without it all turning to anarchy?

The IOC, Miah says, has tried to exert control by creating its own social media hub ? gathering athletes' tweets and posts from Facebook, the other formidable player in this landscape. But it hasn't always worked out as planned.

On Saturday, U.S. women's soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo launched a Twitter outburst against Brandi Chastain, the former American soccer player who is now an analyst on NBC. "Its 2 bad we can't have commentators who better represents the team&knows more about the game," Solo wrote.

Dozens of athletes, including some British soccer players, have taken to Twitter to promote their sponsors' products, a violation of Olympic rules that could theoretically lead to their expulsions. Some Olympians, undoubtedly delighting agents and marketers back home, have started an online campaign to get the rules changed.

And it's not just athletes who are stirring the stew of controversy.

British lawmaker Aidan Burley earned a sharp rebuke from fellow conservatives after he tweeted that Danny Boyle's critically acclaimed opening ceremony, which told the story of Britain's history in a rousing mix of music, symbolism and showmanship, was "leftie multicultural crap."

A British journalist said his Twitter account was blocked after he criticized NBC's coverage of the opening ceremony and posted the e-mail of a network executive. And thousands of disgruntled Olympics viewers set up hashtag "nbcfail" on Twitter to air complaints about the media company's coverage.

Then there's the teenager from Dorset who was arrested Tuesday after a series of offensive and, authorities say, menacing tweets directed at British Olympian Tom Daley. The suspect could be prosecuted under British law.

And yet Twitter has fast become an indispensable part of the Olympic scene. It is as valuable to today's spectators as programs and scorecards were to another generation, and it is just as important to the athletes seeking to connect with supporters from behind the Olympic curtain.

For young fans, "take away Twitter and you take away part of the experience," said Steve Jones, a professor who studies online culture and communications at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Olympians have used Twitter to tell supporters what they are eating, how they are feeling and who they are hanging out with. Jamaican mega-star Usain Bolt tweeted about his craving for chicken. American hurdler Lolo Jones revealed she's a virgin.

Perhaps that is too much information and intimacy for some, but Twitter, Facebook and their many copycats are not going anywhere, and it's time we got used to it.

Andy Hunt, the head of the British Olympic association, found himself dealing with a double whammy of Twitter eruptions ? defending his star diver against social-network vitriol while vowing to look into whether the host country's soccer players should be disciplined for using the site for "ambush marketing."

"I think everyone knows, if you use social media extensively, you have to accept you get bad as well as good," Hunt told journalists. "And sometimes bad is wholly unacceptable."

NASA to athletic Mars rover: 'Stick the landing'

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? It's NASA's most ambitious and expensive Mars mission yet ? and it begins with the red planet arrival late Sunday of the smartest interplanetary rover ever built. Also the most athletic.

Like an Olympic gymnast, it needs to "stick the landing."

It won't be easy. The complicated touchdown NASA designed for the Curiosity rover is so risky it's been described as "seven minutes of terror" ? the time it takes to go from 13,000 mph to a complete stop.

Scientists and engineers will be waiting anxiously 154 million miles away as the spacecraft plunges through Mars' thin atmosphere, and in a new twist, attempts to slowly lower the rover to the bottom of a crater with cables.

By the time Earthlings receive first word of its fate, it will have planted six wheels on the ground ? or tumbled itself into a metal graveyard.

If it succeeds, a video camera aboard the rover will have captured the most dramatic minutes for the first filming of a landing on another planet.

"It would be a major technological step forward if it works. It's a big gamble," said American University space policy analyst Howard McCurdy.

The future direction of Mars exploration is hanging on the outcome of this $2.5 billion science project to determine whether the environment was once suitable for microbes to live. Previous missions have found ice and signs that water once flowed. Curiosity will drill into rocks and soil in search of carbon and other elements.

Named for the Roman god of war, Mars is unforgiving with a hostile history of swallowing man-made spacecraft. It's tough to fly there and even tougher to touch down. More than half of humanity's attempts to land on Mars have ended in disaster. Only the U.S. has tasted success, but there's no guarantee this time.

"You've done everything that you can think of to ensure mission success, but Mars can still throw you a curve," said former NASA Mars czar Scott Hubbard who now teaches at Stanford University.

The Mini Cooper-sized spacecraft traveled 8? months to reach Mars. In a sort of celestial acrobatics, Curiosity will twist, turn and perform other maneuvers throughout the seven-minute thrill ride to the surface.

Why is NASA attempting such a daredevil move? It had little choice. Earlier spacecraft dropped to the Martian surface like a rock, swaddled in airbags, and bounced to a stop. Such was the case with the much smaller and lighter rovers Spirit and Opportunity in 2004.

At nearly 2,000 pounds, Curiosity is too heavy, so engineers had to come up with a new way to land. Friction from the thin atmosphere isn't enough to slow down the spacecraft without some help.

During its fiery plunge, Curiosity will brake by executing a series of S-curves ? similar to how the space shuttle re-entered Earth's atmosphere. At 900 mph, it will unfurl its huge parachute. It then will shed the heat shield that took the brunt of the atmospheric friction and switch on its ground-sensing radar.

A mile from the surface, Curiosity will jettison the parachute and fire up its rocket-powered backpack to slow it down until it hovers. Cables will unspool from the backpack and slowly lower the rover ? at less than 2 mph. The cables keep the rocket engines from getting too close and kicking up dust.

Once the rover senses touchdown, the cords will be cut.

Even if the intricate choreography goes according to script, a freak dust storm, sudden gust of wind or other problem can mar the landing.

"The degree of difficulty is above a 10," said Adam Steltzner, an engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the mission.

It takes 14 minutes for radio signals on Mars to travel to Earth. The lag means Curiosity will already be alive or dead by the time mission control finds out.

The rover's landing target is Gale Crater near the Martian equator. It's an ancient depression about the size of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined with a 3-mile-high mountain rising from the center of the crater floor.

Scientists know Gale was once waterlogged. Images from space reveal mineral signatures of clays and sulfate salts, which form in the presence of water, in older layers near the bottom of the mountain.

During its two-year exploration, the plutonium-powered Curiosity will climb the lower mountain flanks to probe the deposits. As sophisticated as the rover is, it cannot search for life. Instead, it carries a toolbox including a power drill, rock-zapping laser and mobile chemistry lab to sniff for organic compounds, considered the chemical building blocks of life. It also has cameras to take panoramic photos.

Humans have been mesmerized by the fourth rock from the sun since the 19th century when American astronomer Percival Lowell, peering through a telescope, theorized that intelligent beings carved what looked like irrigation canals. Scientists now think that if life existed on Mars ? a big if ? it would be in the form of microbes.

Curiosity will explore whether the crater ever had the right environment for microorganisms to take hold.

Even before landing, it got busy taking radiation readings in space during its 352-million-mile cruise ? information that should help its handlers back home determine the radiation risk to astronauts who eventually travel to the red planet.

Curiosity's journey has been fraught with bumps. Since NASA had never built such a complicated machine before, work took longer than expected and costs soared. Curiosity was supposed to launch in 2009 and land in 2010, but the mission ? already $1 billion over budget ? was pushed back two years.

The delay created a cascade. Burdened with budget woes, NASA reneged on a partnership with the European Space Agency to land a drill-toting spacecraft in 2018. The space agency is in the midst of revamping its Mars exploration program that will hinge heavily on whether Curiosity succeeds.

The extra time allowed engineers to test and re-test the rover and all its parts, taking a spacecraft stunt double to the Mojave Desert as if it were Mars. For the past several months, engineers held dress rehearsals at the sprawling JPL campus 10 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles in anticipation of landing day when they will carry on a decades-old tradition of passing out "good luck" peanuts.

Practice is over. It's show time. To Mars or bust.
