Can an online auto insurance quote save me money? | FAQ

If you haven?t shopped around for automobile insurance recently, taking a few minutes to get an online quote has the potential to save you hundreds of dollars per year. Even if you just compared auto insurance quotes six months ago, it?s time to do it again.

By gathering the proper documentation, providing the right information, and ensuring that you are properly comparing one car insurance policy to another, you have the potential to save a large sum of money with one quick, simple online auto insurance quote.

save money on auto insuranceInformation to Include When Getting Online Auto Insurance Quotes

Including the right information when getting online auto insurance quotes can provide car insurance companies with the information necessary to give you a better rate. A wide variety of factors, many of which may not seem intuitive, can influence your online car insurance quote. Information you should be sure to mention when seeking online quotes include the following:

  • Include your marital status and how many children you have in your online quote application. Although this information is typically optional, lower car insurance rates are often offered to married people and people with children. Car insurance companies believe that you are likely a safer driver if you have loved ones? lives in your hands on a regular basis.
  • If you have a clean driving record, be sure to mention that when applying for a quote. A clean driving record makes you appear to be a safer driver and a better risk for insurance companies.
  • Mention any security features your car has, including a car alarm or GPS tracking system. These features lead insurance companies to believe it is less likely for your car to be stolen, thereby making insuring your vehicle a better risk.
  • If you park your car in a garage, be sure to include this information when apply for a car insurance quote. Cars parked in garages are protected against theft and weather damage.

Information to Gather Before Applying for an Online Auto Insurance Quote

Obtaining an online auto insurance quote is quick and easy, but only if you have the right information readily available. Gathering the documents you are likely to need when applying for an online car insurance quote can save you time and frustration. Documents you should gather include:

  1. Your driver?s license. Your driver?s license is both a form of personal identification to prove that you are who you say you are, but is also linked to your driving record. Car insurance companies often ask for your driver?s license number and state of issue when providing online quotes.
  2. The driver?s license number of anyone else who will be listed on your policy. For example, if your spouse or children will be driving a car you want to insure, the car insurance company will want their driver?s license information to verify their identities and driving records.
  3. The vehicle identification numbers of all of the cars you want to insure. A car?s VIN is its unique identifying number. Car insurance companies often ask for cars? VINs when providing online insurance quotes to ensure they are providing appropriate quotes for the cars listed. For example, the quote for insuring a Mitsubishi Eclipse would be different than insuring a Dodge Ram.

Driving school educationMake Sure You are Comparing Apples to Apples

When reviewing your online auto insurance quote it is important that you are comparing similar types of auto coverage when deciding if you should switch car insurance companies for what appears to be a better deal. There is more to a car insurance policy than your premium. Make you compare the following when you receive your online auto insurance quote:

  • The amount of liability coverage offered by the new insurance company compared to your current policy. It?s worth paying a little bit more for additional liability coverage.
  • The deductible for fixing your vehicle if it were to become damaged. You must pay the deductible before your car insurance company will pay for the remainder of the necessary repairs. Deductibles vary greatly from one policy to the next, so be sure you compare these numbers when determining if the online quote is a good deal.
  • Any extra benefits, such as roadside assistance and a rental vehicle allowance if your car is in the shop. These benefits are not standard with all auto insurance policies, so take a close look at both your current and potentially new policies before deciding which deal is better.

The bottom line is that taking the time to get an online auto insurance quote has the very real possibility of saving you money. However, you won?t know just how much money you can save until you apply for a quote. The process is generally very quick as long as you have the right documentation readily available and understand how to compare your current policy with the policy you are receiving an online quote for.

compare car insurance onlineIf your ultimate goal is to save the most amount of money and you are willing to sacrifice coverage where necessary, choose the lowest coverage levels you are comfortable with when requesting an online auto insurance quote. State minimum car coverage is suitable for many drivers.

Many car insurance companies which offer online quotes have staff available by phone, e-mail, or instant messaging to assist you with any problems, questions or concerns that may arise while requesting a quote. If you are not happy with the online quote you receive, be sure to ask if there is anything you can do to lower your quote. Sometimes there are auto insurance discounts you may be eligible for or coverage changes you can make to lower your quote.

Although it takes a bit of time, taking the opportunity to gather necessary documents prior to applying for an online auto quote and ensuring you compare the insurance policy you are considering with the policy you currently have can save you a lot of money. Duggar Family Tweets Pic of Miscarried Fetus

The Duggar Family, grieving from the loss of what would've been their 20th child, not only named the miscarried baby (a girl, Jubilee), they held a memorial service for her and took photos of the corpse, one of which made it onto Twitter.

It's unclear which family member or friend posted it online, but the Duggars weren't trying to keep it private. An artistic picture of the fetus, due in April, was distributed it at the memorial Wednesday. We have not posted it here for obvious reasons.

The Duggar Family Photo

Michelle Duggar, who has given birth 19 times, and suffered severe medical issues with her youngest, Josie-Brooklyn (now 2), announced the miscarriage last week.

Because it was during the second trimester, the little girl's body was partially formed, and therefore had to be delivered, allowing the family to take photos afterward.

Alongside the image of the fetus, the Duggar family wrote the following message: "There is no foot too small that it cannot leave an imprint on this world."

Say what you will about them, the family marches to the beat of their own drum.

What do you think of the Duggars' way of honoring their unborn baby?

Maoist rebels blast Indian school, police station (AP)

PATNA, India ? Maoist rebels have raided police posts, engaged in shootouts and bombed government buildings and railway lines in eastern India in a two-day campaign of violence protesting their leader's killing, police said Tuesday.

The attacks are one of this year's worst spasms of violence by the rebels, whom the goverment considers to be India's greatest internal security threat.

While 11 people died in the violence Sunday, no deaths were reported from Monday's attacks including a nighttime raid on a police station that sparked a heavy gunfight in the south of Bihar state, District Police Superintendent Siddhartha Mohan Jain said.

The rebels had killed 10 officers and an 8-year-old boy on Sunday in bombing and firing on a police convoy traveling with a Jharkhand state lawmaker. Another attack on a paramilitary camp that day in Bihar led to a three-hour gunbattle that injured one rebel, who was later arrested, police said.

Another three suspected rebels were arrested with explosives Monday in the south of Chhattisgarh state, where railway tracks had been blown up at several points as well as in neighboring Jharkhand. The rebels also set fire to a cell phone tower in Bihar on Sunday, police said.

Public transportation as well as supply deliveries were stalled as trains were canceled and buses stayed off the road for fear of hitting land mines on rural roads.

The rebels also bombed an unoccupied school building around midnight Monday in the west of Jharkhand, police said.

Though the rebels typically target infrastructure like railways and police stations, dozens of schools have been destroyed in recent years, according to a 2010 UNESCO report, while security forces have occupied schools for anti-rebel operations.

The rebels have pledged to avenge the Nov. 24 killing of Koteshwar Rao, alias Kishenji, who they say was captured and executed during a manhunt in the jungles of West Bengal state. Security forces said the rebel leader was killed in a shootout while resisting arrest.

Thousands of people including police, militants and civilians have been killed in just the last decade of the rebels' fight to demand land and jobs for agricultural laborers and the poor.

Referred to as Naxalites, for the West Bengal village of Naxalbari where the movement began in 1967, the fighters were inspired by Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong and have drawn strength from displaced tribal populations opposed corporate exploitation and official corruption. Today the rebels are spread across 20 of India's 28 states.

A Missouri five-and-dime holds its own with novelties

One of the last five-and-dime stores in the United States can be found in Branson, Mo., where variety and novelty keep customers coming back.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.?

Sitting on Branson?s historic square, a store harks back to an era when families loaded the station wagon and drove to town on Saturday. The store sells ?dry goods? from decades past such as ?sewing notions,? 1940s starlet paper dolls, dainty handkerchiefs, wax lips, and lye soap.

This year, Dick?s celebrates its 50th anniversary. It?s one of the last five-and-dime stores in the United States.?

Started in 1961 by Dick and June Hartley, the store is now run by their son, Steve, who continues his late father?s dream of offering a shopping experience as entertainment. Dick?s woos customers with more than 180,000 different items and novelty d?cor, such as an extensive framed arrowhead collection and more than 100 World War II-era signed aviation prints hanging from the ceiling.

?You have to have heart and a passion to set yourself apart from those box stores because you can?t compete with their prices,? says Mr. Hartley, who left corporate life in 1993 to join the family business.

Computers don?t track inventory. Instead, clerks working the floor closely watch what sells and what doesn?t. They ask customers what they like. The store is chaotic and lively.

A grandfather shows his grandson a bag of American-made glass marbles, a potato gun, and a yo-yo. Down another narrow aisle, a tourist fills up a vintage wood, cloth, and metal shopping bag with holiday bubble lights. Still another customer peruses the store?s 250 board games and 30 feet of jigsaw puzzles.

Dick?s prides itself on obscure items. Hartley scours trade shows for hot sellers such as the 1950s perfume ?Blue Waltz,? cinnamon toothpicks, cap guns, and 20 styles of hair nets in 1960s packaging that sell for 89 cents.

?We will keep that dime-store image, fully assorted and fully stocked,? Hartley says.

Cambodian court to question ex-Khmer Rouge leaders (AP)

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia ? Three senior leaders of Cambodia's brutal Khmer Rouge regime will be questioned for the first time at a U.N.-backed tribunal over their roles in the deaths of an estimated 1.7 million people when their movement held power in the 1970s.

The long-awaited trial began late last month with opening statements, and on Monday the court is to focus on charges involving the forced movement of people and crimes against humanity.

After the Khmer Rouge captured Phnom Penh in 1975 they began moving an estimated 1 million people from the capital into the countryside in an effort to create a communist agrarian utopia.

The defendants are accused of crimes against humanity, genocide, religious persecution, homicide and torture.

All have denied wrongdoing.

France to bring home staff from embassy in Iran (AP)

PARIS ? France is temporarily downsizing its embassy in Iran and will bring some employees and their families home, a French official said Saturday. The move is the latest fallout from protesters' storming of the British embassy in Tehran and adds to the international pressure on the Iranian government.

The French diplomatic official described the decision as a preventative security measure, and acknowledged it was a response to the attack on the U.K. mission. But he stressed the French embassy will remain open and declined to specify how many staffers will be sent home.

Some 20 to 30 French citizens, including some French-Iranian dual nationals, work at the embassy, he said. Decisions about who gets to leave will be made on a "case by case basis," the official said. He added that the repatriations could begin as early as Sunday or Monday.

The French Lycee, or high school, in Tehran will also remain open, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record.

London alleges Tuesday's attack ? by protesters angry over the proposed toughening of sanctions over Iran's nuclear program ? was sanctioned by Tehran's ruling elite.

It has prompted Iran's most serious diplomatic fallout with the West since the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy after the Islamic Revolution, and some Iranian political figures have voiced doubts over whether anything can be gained from escalating the diplomatic battle.

Britain has pulled its diplomats out of Iran and expelled Iranian diplomats from its soil. France announced earlier this week that it was recalling its ambassador for consultations following the attack, as have Germany and the Netherlands. Italy and Spain summoned Iranian envoys to condemn the attacks.

The embassy attack has helped fuel support for additional sanctions on the Iranian government over its nuclear program. The U.S. and Western allies including Britain suspect Iran is trying to build a weapons program, but Tehran says it is only interested in nuclear energy.

On Saturday, the Iranian diplomats expelled from London arrived home, the official IRNA news agency reported. The roughly two dozen diplomats and their families were greeted at Tehran's Mehrabad airport and given a hero's welcome by about 150 hard-liners.
