As a Baby Boomer, it seems I talk with someone every day who is caring for an elderly parent or loved one. ?I have yet to meet a caregiver who felt prepared for the role. ?Some caregivers actually have the loved one living with them. ?The loved one may still be in their own home, an assisted living, an adult family home or even skilled nursing. Either way, being a caregiver means you are the one on the front line, making the decisions, phone calls, comforting, transporting, encouraging the loved one. ?You?re simply the one in charge of well-being. ?By the time you take care of the needs of the loved one, your own family-and maybe your job-you have no energy to pay attention to, or even admit to, your own needs.

What Can the Family Caregiver Do?

• Talk to peers caring for their loved ones. ?Every situation is different. ?But every conversation reminds you that you?re not alone. Join a support group. ?Those members will quickly become new friends.
• Have The Talk as soon as you can. ?Research available resources.
• Do your best. ?Let go of the guilt

When you assess your caregiving journey, you will have a resume. ?It won?t be on paper or even printable.

It?s a resume that will define your own legacy of life, the one that describes who you are. ?The is a resume no one ever reads; they see it in your actions and your character.
