Chinese document shows Japan owns islands

Big News Network.com Sunday 30th December, 2012

A Chinese official document has been found which states Japan is the owner of a group of islands in the East China Sea, to which Beijing has also laid claim.

The Japan Times newspaper has released a copy of the document which describes the disputed islands as part of the Ryukyu Islands, today known as Okinawa.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry document also to the islands by their Japanese name Senkakus, part of the Ryukyu chain.

The document was completed in May 1970, in the months following the foundation of the People's Republic of China.

Japanese scholars have described the document as evidence that China regarded the Senkaku Islands as part of the Ryukyus and not part of Taiwan, which has been a long held Chinese claim.

Japan and China have been in a long dispute over the sovereignty of the islands, which contain oil, minerals and fish.

Japan announced in September that it planned to buy the islands from Japanese private owners.

Chinese people held anti-Japan demonstrations following the announcement.
