Amy Buchwald: Wife-beating -- the Musical?

How is it that, although ever-present, domestic violence still sits in society's peripheral view? Unless we get to exploit it for drama, we don't necessarily care about what is going on in the realm of day-to-day incidents. Sure, we see it every day in the news, on late night television, played out in the tabloids -- women (and sometimes men) beaten, stabbed, scarred, choked, sent to the emergency room or the morgue. The stories abound about restraining orders violated, women -- or women and children and even the family pet -- murdered in their homes. We read it, we hear it, yet, from the drone of repetition, we grow numb to this ongoing stain that's part of the dialogue of sexual partnerships. Unless someone like Chris Brown takes a swing (or several violently brutal ones) at a lovely, young, pop star we all admire, (Rihanna), the event doesn't spark public attention or outcry. But even then, polls, surveys, public opinion, show a hearty fan base supporting Chris Brown and wondering, what the hell Rihanna could have done to provoke him.

This cycle, not unlike the cycle of domestic abuse, continues, despite the harsh reality of U.S. statistics. Nearly one-third of women report experiencing violence from a current or former spouse or boyfriend at some point in their lives. More than 1,000 women are murdered each year by a current or former intimate partner. Two million women a year sustain injuries. What's the ongoing effect of such attacks? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, women who have experienced domestic violence are 80 percent more likely to have a stroke, 70 percent more likely to have heart disease, 60 percent more likely to have asthma, and 70 percent more likely to drink heavily than women who have not experienced intimate partner violence.

Domestic violence has been a frequent visitor in entertainment, yet it hasn't necessarily been recognized as violence. On television as far back as the Honeymooners, hitting a woman to enforce a husband's authority for the purposes of humor was not considered outlandish. It's difficult to see the value of this as comedy when it is happening to you. In film, slapping a woman around continues to be a "manly" thing to do, not only to silence the classically perceived "hysterical" woman or subdue a woman to a man's will, but also to romanticize and eroticize said violence. Using violence and domination for entertainment purposes is a go-to classic tactic, allowing the viewer to observe what's going on from a safe distance, providing a vicarious thrill to the observer.

I want to eliminate that comfort zone by placing an audience in front of these events, just like the view of neighbors who might have to watch such violence unfold before them, but then -- bring them in even closer with music. Theater and music have the power to open up an issue in a way no statistic can. Shows like Next to Normal, which addresses the stigma of mental health, and Scottsboro Boys, which opens up the social injustices of racism in the south, shed light on dark issues or taboo subjects. They touch and engage in a completely different way. Music reaches people on whole other level. It works on a different part of the brain, one that remembers and repeats the emotions of that singular moment on stage.

Like the above-mentioned shows, Candy Hearts is the first of its kind in the musical theater genre. So, even without a public opinion poll I don't think I'll call it Wife-Beating the Musical. Candy Hearts shows human beings, male and female, straight and gay, caught up in the struggle to have control within relationships, from the most intimate aspects -- sex; to the simplest aspects -- what's for dinner? There's no doubt that domestic violence is a complex issue, far beyond the scope of the question that's almost always asked about the abused: "Why don't they just leave?". Candy Hearts makes it clear that these struggles stem from influences of culture, religion, economics, and the cycle of heredity. Sometimes that struggle leads to enlightenment, sometimes to an end the people involved never imagined. Yes, Candy Hearts is at times slap-in-the-face raw, but it intends to offer insight into the various ways two people can be trapped in a relationship and, on occasion, how they can find their way out of that trap together.

AOC Q2963PM

If you have more than one monitor on your desktop and want to free up some valuable workplace real estate, consider replacing it with an ultra-wide monitor like the AOC Q2963PM . This 29-inch display has a resolution of 2,560-by-1,080, a 21:9 aspect ratio, and an IPS panel that offers rich color reproduction. It offers every video port you'll ever need and is reasonably priced, but it's not without a few minor flaws; it loses luminance when viewed from a top and bottom angle and it lacks ergonomic adjustability.

Design and Features
The Q2963PM's massive screen is housed in a matte black cabinet with uber-thin top and side bezels. The side bezels are curve around to the back of the cabinet and the 0.75-inch bottom bezel holds a small shiny AOC logo. There are four function buttons, a power switch, and a blue LED power light on the right side of the cabinet. None of the buttons are labeled but that's not a problem; pressing any key brings up an on-screen label that uses large icons to describe what each button does.

All of the I/O ports are mounted on the wedge-shaped stand, which has a removable base so you can hang the monitor on a wall using the VESA mounting holes. On the right side of the mounting arm are DVI, VGA, and DisplayPort inputs, while halfway down the arm, just above where it is connected to the base, there is an HDMI input, a DisplayPort output, an audio input, and a headphone jack. The DisplayPort output makes it possible to daisy chain multiple monitors using special DisplayPort Multi-stream cables (not included). The stand has a hinge that lets you tilt the panel forward and backward but there are no height, swivel, or pivot adjustments.

Picture settings include contrast, brightness, gamma, and Eco mode, which is AOC's name for picture mode and includes Standard, Text, Internet, Game, Movie, and Sports presets. Color settings include red, green, and blue level adjustments, Color Temperature, and Dynamic Color Boost (DCB), which offers green, blue, and skin tone enhancement settings.

The Q2963PM comes with a couple of neat utilities, including Screen+, a screen splitter that lets you split your desktop into different panels, with each panel displaying a different window. All you have to do is drag a window to the selected panel and drop it. Also included is the AOC e-Saver power management software, and i-Menu, which lets you change picture settings using a keyboard and mouse rather than the function buttons. Included in the box are VGA, DVI, and HDMI cables as well as a resource CD. The Q2963PM is covered by a three-year parts, labor, and backlight warranty.

Performance
The Q2963PM uses an IPS panel that delivers rich color quality and good grayscale performance. It was able to accurately reproduce all steps of the DisplayMate 64-Step Grayscale test and there was no evidence of tinting in the middle of the scale. Colors were mostly accurate; as shown in the color chart below, reds and blues were nearly perfect (the closer the dot is to its corresponding box the more accurate the color) but greens were a bit oversaturated, which is fairly common among affordable monitors given green's huge color space. Fortunately, the saturated greens did not result in greenish highlights or skewed colors.

Viewing angles performance was generally good, although there was a slight loss of luminance when viewed from the top and bottom angles. I noticed this with the Dell UltraSharp U2913WM also. The Q2963PM's 5-millisecond (black-to-white) pixel response handled fast motion video without any noticeable smearing or blur. In fact, this monitor is ideal for watching movies, whether in a separate window or in full screen mode. It offers crisp image detail and the embedded 3-watt speakers are nice and loud, although they could use a bass boost.

The Q2963PM used 33 watts of power during testing while operating in Standard mode. That's a few watts less than the 29-inch Dell U2913WM (36 watts) and significantly lower than the 30-inch Dell UltraSharp U3014 (60 watts).

If you require a dual monitor setup but don't have the room on your desktop, the AOC Q2963PM is a good bet. It offers good color and grayscale performance, loads of video inputs, and multiple monitor support. And, it's reasonably priced. That said, a USB hub would be a welcome addition, as would a height adjustable stand. Both the NEC MultiSync PA271W and Dell UltraSharp 3014 offer multiple USB ports and highly adjustable stand, but you'll pay significantly more for these features and don't get the full Ultra-wide, 21:9 screen.

3rd man sought in Aaron Hernandez murder probe; Puma drops NFL star

Law enforcement officials have confirmed that Aaron Hernandez, who has been charged in the murder of Odin Lloyd, is also being investigated for two 2012 murders. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports and NBC legal analyst Lisa Bloom discusses the revelations.

By Richard Esposito and Erin McClam, NBC News

A third man was in custody Friday in Florida in an expanding murder investigation swirling around Aaron Hernandez, the star NFL tight end accused of orchestrating the shooting death of a friend.

Massachusetts State Police

Ernest Wallace, 41, known as ?Fish,? turned himself in in the Miami suburb of Miramar, police said. Massachusetts police had said they were seeking him as an accessory after murder, and that he was considered armed and dangerous. They were on their way to Florida to pick him up, NBC affiliate WHDH in Boston reported.

Hernandez, an All-Pro who was released by the New England Patriots after his arrest earlier this week, is charged with first-degree murder in the execution of the friend, Odin Lloyd. He was denied a second request for bail Thursday.

Sources told NBC News that he was being investigated in another case ? the drive-by killings of two men in Boston last year. The men were shot to death in an SUV after leaving a nightclub.

Hernandez, who is being held in a Massachusetts jail, lost a second endorsement deal Thursday. The Puma sportswear company, which signed Hernandez to a two-year deal in April, told CNBC it was ending the relationship ?in light of the current situation.? CytoSport, maker of the Muscle Milk supplement drink, dropped Hernandez as a pitchman last week.

Authorities have said Hernandez took part in Lloyd?s killing in the early hours of June 17 after summoning two friends from out of state. Lloyd?s body was found in an industrial park near Hernandez?s home in North Attleborough, Mass. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty.

Connecticut authorities said Thursday that they had charged another man in connection with Lloyd?s killing ? Carlos Ortiz of Bristol, the city where Hernandez grew up. He was charged as a fugitive and agreed to return to Massachusetts, authorities said.

Authorities have not spelled out the connection they believe Wallace and Ortiz have to the killing. They have said Lloyd was killed by two shots fired from someone standing above him, but they have not said who they believe pulled the trigger.

Ortiz was being held on $1.5 million bail. His public defender declined comment on Thursday.

Prosecutors say that text messages ? including from Lloyd to his sister when he was worried about his safety ? and surveillance video are part of their case against Hernandez. The judge who denied his second request for bail, Renee Dupuis of Superior Court in Fall River, described the state?s case as ?circumstantial but very, very strong.?

Prosecutors said they had uncovered four new pieces of evidence in less than 24 hours after searching a condo leased by Hernandez. They said they had found ammunition, a clip and a picture of Hernandez with a Glock handgun.

William McCauley, an assistant district attorney, also said that Hernandez had interfered with the investigation by home surveillance-camera video and instructing his girlfriend not to talk to investigators.

?The evidence of his guilt is overwhelming,? prosecutor William McCauley said.

Hernandez?s lawyers argued that he deserved bail because of his upstanding character and clean record, and because he was not a risk to flee. They noted that he stayed put last week, when rumors circulated that Hernandez was about to be arrested.

Pakistan extends refugee status for Afghans

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? The United Nations says Pakistan has extended refugee status for over a million Afghans living in the country. It was set to expire June 30.

The U.N.'s refugee agency said Friday Pakistan agreed to extend their status while it comes up with a new policy.

Pakistan has been hosting Afghan refugees dating back to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan three decades ago. There are 1.6 million in Pakistan. Many Pakistanis have become frustrated with the length of time the Afghans have stayed and want them to leave.

Pakistan has said it will not forcibly evict Afghans. However, revoking their refugee status would encourage people to return to Afghanistan.

Refugee status allows Afghans to get a government ID card that they use for everyday activities like banking or registering for school.

'Blade Runner' Oscar Pistorius resumes training ahead of murder trial

Oscar Pistorius pictured training in Italy ahead of the London 2012 Olympics.

By Alastair Jamieson, Staff writer, NBC News

Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee Olympic sprinter who faces trial for the alleged murder of his model girlfriend, has resumed training, his spokesman announced Friday.

The Paralympic gold medal winner, dubbed "Blade Runner" for his prosthetic legs, has ?decided to resume a low-key track routine? to help him prepare mentally for the trial, his media manager Anneliese Burgess said in a statement.

The South African runner ?is not contemplating a formal return to athletics and his training is not aimed at preparing for competition,? the statement said.

?His focus at this time remains entirely on the court case," Burgess added. "His family, and those close to him, have encouraged him to spend a few hours a week on the track to assist him in finding the necessary mental and emotional equilibrium to process his trauma and prepare for the trial.?

Pistorius, 26, is accused of deliberately shooting Reeva Steenkamp,?29, in a bathroom at his home in Pretoria, South Africa, on February 14.

He denies the murder charge. Pistorius says he mistook her for an intruder.

Thy Olympian was granted bail after a pre-trial hearing earlier this year. The murder trial is set to begin August 19.

?I Was in a Very Deep Foxhole?

Mark Kirk was elected to the Senate in 2010, but he?s not your ordinary Republican freshman. First, he?s a moderate from the Chicago suburbs. And he was probably best known for taking Barack Obama?s seat until 2012, when the former intelligence officer in the Naval Reserves suffered a stroke at just 52. It spared his mind but hindered his mobility. He returned to the Senate in January, slowly walking up the 45 steps of the Capitol to applause from his colleagues. He spoke with National Journal about his recovery, Chicago?s mayor, and the National Security Agency mess. Edited excerpts follow.

NJ How are you feeling?

KIRK Better and better. I would say rehab works.

NJ?How much time are you spending on rehab at this point?

KIRK?I go to the Senate gym each day. I also go to Walter Reed. A lot of my fellow patients are missing limbs. You?re having a tough day and you look over at a soldier who might be missing a leg or two arms, and he is doing great. And you think to yourself, ?There is nothing challenging me like what is challenging him.?

NJ?Everyone was marveling when you came back to the Senate and made it up those stairs.

KIRK?They all told me that was the first big bipartisan moment that had happened in a while. That?s something really to celebrate.

NJ?Is it harder to do your job? And does it still hold your interest to do things like dial around for fundraising or haggle over amendments?

KIRK?What I would say is that the Senate is appropriately designed to accommodate older men [laughter], and so I?m in pretty good shape. The whole thing that drives me is public service.

NJ?Has this experience changed how you see health care?

KIRK?My concern is what happens if you have a stroke and you?re not in the U.S. Senate and you have no insurance and no income. That?s the question that I have been asking, and the reality is that if you?re on Illinois Medicaid and are a stroke survivor, you will get just five visits to the rehab specialist. That?s it. Senator [Tim] Johnson [D-S.D.] and I are working on a stroke agenda.

NJ?You underwent brain surgeries. From what I?ve read it was a spiritual journey.

KIRK?I spent a lot of time in the ICU on the edge of oblivion and really did think a lot of death and the process of being dead. They say there are no atheists in foxholes, and I was in a very deep foxhole.

NJ?I heard you had visions of angels, with New York accents, not Chicago ones.

KIRK?That?s right. Sometimes I?d look over and see figures talking about me. They had a pretty good sense of humor.

NJ?You were in military intelligence. From what you know about these NSA programs, do you have real concerns?

KIRK?I do. It?s bad intelligence work to be focusing in on 121 million Americans who aren?t doing anything particularly terrorist-related.

NJ?Did the NSA go in this direction on its own, or was it just doing what Congress authorized?

KIRK?Just because you brief eight people in a windowless room doesn?t mean that Congress supports you. Congress supports you through open debate and the involvement of the American people through the 24-hour news cycle.

NJ?It seems like we?re in a world now where a Bradley Manning or an Edward Snowden has so much more access than an intel officer might have had 20 years ago.

KIRK?We have a classified Internet on the backside of the intelligence community, and if you?re on that system, then a Bradley Manning can download the presidential book of secrets like in the movie [National Treasure].

NJ?How do you think Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is doing?

KIRK?Well. Really well. I?ve only known him since he was elected to the House. And I think he?s doing a very good job.

NJ?They say moderate Republicans are an endangered species. What would you like to see your party do in the coming years?

KIRK?We?ve been called extinct so many times that it turns out not to be true.

NJ?But what about the national party?

KIRK?What often happens is that people or politicians get out of date, and that?s my worry about the Republican Party. It apparently doesn?t understand how multicolored and how multicultural our country has become.

NJ?You?re interested in running again?

KIRK?Yes.

AJ Marin, Pennsylvania Activist, Arrested For Writing Pro-Health Care Message In Chalk

If you thought throwing down a protest slogan with some sidewalk chalk was a safe way to practice civil disobedience, think again.

A few days after a judge ruled that a San Diego, Calif. man must stand trial on 13 counts of vandalism over anti-big bank messages written in water-soluble chalk outside Bank of America branches -- which together carry a maximum of 13 years in jail or a $13,000 fine -- comes this story out of Pennsylvania. Sean Kitchen of Raging Chicken Press reports on the strange conclusion to a protest at the state capitol that sought to pressure Gov. Tom Corbett (R) to expand Medicaid under Obamacare:

Late last night, the demonstrators were escorted out of the capitol, and afterwards some of the demonstrators went back to governor?s mansion to continue their demonstration. However, while at the governor?s mansion, a health care activist -- AJ Marin -- was arrested for ?chalking? on a public sidewalk. According to his citation, he was arrested for writing a ?derogatory remark about the governor on the sidewalk.? The ?derogatory? comment that AJ was arrested for stated: ?Governor Corbett has health insurance, we should too.?

Here's a photo of Marin's message, via Kitchen:

chalking

According to a citation, Marin was charged with "disorderly conduct." Click over to Raging Chicken Press for more on the story.

Corbett announced in February that he wouldn't support expanding Medicaid rolls to at least 500,000 Pennsylvanians under President Barack Obama's health care law. Democrats have been seeking to find a path forward, however, with lawmakers in the state Senate currently working to craft a bipartisan piece of legislation to offer health care coverage to more low income residents.

While they continue to wrangle support for a Medicaid expansion bill, protesters have trickled to the state capitol to voice their support for the measure, which studies have shown would provide a significant boost to the state's GDP and employment numbers.

Are college student hook-ups linked to anxiety and depression?

June 28, 2013 ? As narratives of "hook-up" culture take center stage in popular media, behavioral researchers are starting to ask what psychological consequences, if any, may be in store for young adults who engage in casual sex.

A new study in The Journal of Sex Research found higher levels of general anxiety, social anxiety, and depression among students who recently had casual sex. Entitled Risky Business: Is There an Association between Casual Sex and Mental Health among Emerging Adults?, the study surveyed over 3,900 heterosexual college students from across the United States about their casual sex behaviors and mental well-being. "Casual sex" was defined as having intercourse with a partner one has known for less than a week. Students from over 30 institutions around the country completed the online survey, making this the largest sample to be collected for a study on this topic. On average, 11% of students reported a casual sex encounter during the month prior to the survey, the majority of whom were men.

The study was led by Dr. Melina M. Bersamin of California State University, Sacramento. According to Dr. Bersamin, "It is premature to conclude that casual sexual encounters pose no harmful psychological risks for young adults." The results "suggest that among heterosexual college students, casual sex was negatively associated with well-being and positively associated with psychological distress."

The researchers also investigated the role of gender in determining mental distress linked to casual sex. Prior studies have found that women respond more negatively to casual sex than men, possibly because of double standards that allow men to have more sexual encounters with a greater number of partners than women. In this study, however, gender did not have an effect on outcomes.

"Risky Business" opens the door to future research questions about causal links between sexual behavior and mental health. Researchers have yet to determine whether casual sex leads to psychological distress, or if existing mental health problems cause young adults to engage in riskier behaviors.

Obama starts long-awaited Africa tour at slave port

By Mark Felsenthal

GOREE ISLAND, Senegal (Reuters) - Almost four centuries after Africans started being shipped to North America as slaves, the first U.S. president of African ancestry on Thursday visited an infamous embarkation point for those destined for lives in chains.

In his first - and, many Africans say, long-overdue - extended tour of the continent since entering the White House, President Barack Obama focused on political and economic issues while also recalling a painful chapter in Africa's and America's past.

On the first leg of an eight-day visit he brought his family to the House of Slaves, a fort built in the late 18th century on Goree Island off the coast of Senegal as a transit point for human beings before they were shipped across the Atlantic. It is now a museum.

"It's a very powerful moment...to be able to come here and to fully appreciate the magnitude of the slave trade, to get a sense in a very intimate way of the incredible inhumanity and hardship that people faced," Obama said in brief remarks.

"More than anything what it reminds us of is that we have to remain vigilant when it comes to the defense of people's human rights."

Obama's father was from Kenya and his mother was from Kansas. First lady Michelle Obama is a descendant of slaves.

Junius Rodriguez, a historian at Eureka College near Peoria, Illinois, said Obama's visit was a reminder of the "remarkable transformation" the United States had undergone.

"We have moved from a society in which African Americans were not viewed as citizens, in which social, economic equality was not provided, to one in which we could elect an African American president," he said before the visit.

Many Africans feel a bond with Obama but have voiced disappointment that he has not engaged with the continent as much as previous presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

During his first term, Obama's only African trip was a one-day stopover in Ghana, and many Africans have been impatient for him to make an extended tour.

"It's a real pleasure for us that the world has advanced enough for a black man to be president of the United States," said Abdoul Aziz Signane, a tailor, purchasing an Obama T-shirt at a shop in the Senegalese capital Dakar.

"It makes us very proud. That's why I came to buy a T-shirt so I can welcome him and tell him 'We love you Obama, a lot.'"

Obama toured tiny cells that once housed men, women, and children before they were taken in chains through the House of Slaves' infamous "door of no return" to waiting ships.

Eloi Coly, curator of the House of Slaves, welcomed Obama's visit. "It's ... an occasion to put the slave house on the map of the world," he said.

APOLOGY UNLIKELY

Earlier on Thursday, Obama held talks with Senegalese President Macky Sall and met with lawyers and judges at the Supreme Court, kicking off his tour with praise for Africa's democratic progress and a pledge to promote trade.

Upon their arrival on the island, the Obamas were greeted by a group of chanting men as well as women and children dressed in colorful, full-length dresses.

While George W. Bush gave a speech at Goree Island in 2003 in which he called slavery a sin, Obama did not use the occasion to make a big speech. A major address is scheduled for Sunday at the University of Cape Town.

Obama - who visited Cape Coast Castle, another slave port, during his Ghana trip in 2009 - met with civic leaders in Goree before returning to the mainland.

His visit raised the question of whether the time has come for a U.S. president to apologize for slavery.

"The magnitude of slavery is unimaginable," Harvard historian Walter Johnson said. "Can Obama heal that wound with a single speech and with the extraordinary symbolism of his visit as U.S. president, is that going to close the circle? Absolutely not."

An apology is seen as unlikely. A sovereign admission of culpability would open the door to a reparations process, something the Obama administration is unlikely to initiate.

Boomerang Android app tames Gmail inboxes with reminders

DNP Boomerang Gmail app comes to Android, available now

The previously web-only Boomerang app for Gmail is now in open beta on Android. Just another mail app, right? Not quite -- Boomerang's hook is that it can bring unanswered messages back to your inbox. More than a clever reminder system, the app uses gesture controls (swipe right to archive, left for snooze and other options) and can schedule outgoing emails, too. According to TechCrunch, developer Baydin is also working on support for non-Gmail services and a tablet-optimized app. Jump to the Google Play link below to get your hands dirty for free.

(AP) ? The office of the South African president says Nelson Mandela's health improved overnight, and his condition remains critical but is now stable.

President Jacob Zuma's office said in a statement Thursday that he received the update from the medical team that is treating the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader at a Pretoria hospital.

Zuma, who visited Mandela on Thursday, said in the statement that the former president is "much better" than when Zuma visited him on the previous night.

His office says it is disturbed by what it calls rumors about Mandela's health. Unconfirmed reports and speculation about Mandela have been swirling on social media and other forums.

Neighbor testifies about Martin-Zimmerman fight

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? A neighbor of George Zimmerman who had perhaps the best view of the struggle between the neighborhood watch volunteer and Trayvon Martin testified at Zimmerman's murder trial Friday that it appeared the unarmed teen was striking Zimmerman while straddling him.

However, Jonathan Good said he did not see anyone's head being slammed into the concrete sidewalk, which Zimmerman has said Martin did to him.

Zimmerman has claimed that he fatally shot 17-year-old Martin last year in self-defense as the Miami-area teen was banging his head into the concrete sidewalk behind the townhomes in a gated community.

But under prosecution questioning, Jonathan Good said he never saw anyone being attacked that way during the fight between Zimmerman and Martin.

"I couldn't see that," Good said moments later while being cross-examined.

Good, the second person to take the witness stand Friday, said he heard a noise behind his townhome in February 2012, and he saw what looked like a tussle when he stepped out onto his patio to see what was happening.

He said he yelled, "What's going on? Stop it."

Good testified he saw a person in black clothing on top of another person with "white or red" clothing. He said he couldn't see faces but it looked like the person on the bottom had lighter skin. Martin was black and was wearing a dark hoodie. Zimmerman identifies as Hispanic and was wearing a red jacket.

"It looked like there were strikes being thrown, punches being thrown," Good said.

Later, under cross-examination, he said that it looked like the person on top was straddling the person on bottom in a mixed-martial arts move known as "ground and pound." When defense attorney Mark O'Mara asked him if the person on top was Martin, Good said, "Correct, that's what it looked like."

Good also said the person on the bottom yelled for help.

During cross-examination, O'Mara got on his knees to recreate the fighting as he asked Good to walk him through it.

Good was in the middle of dialing 911 inside his townhome when he heard a gunshot, he said.

Zimmerman, 29, could get life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder. Zimmerman followed Martin in his truck and called a police dispatch number before he and the teen got into a fight.

Zimmerman has denied the confrontation had anything to do with race, as Martin's family and their supporters have claimed.

Before Good testified, a worker at a video surveillance company that maintains cameras at the townhome community took the witness stand. A prosecutor played two videos from surveillance cameras; one showed what looks like a person walking past a window at the complex's clubhouse, and another showed what looks like someone with a flashlight by the complex's mailboxes.

Greg McKinney said the digital clock on the video is off by 18 minutes, a point O'Mara hammered home by getting McKinney to concede the timing difference was inexact and could be more than 18 minutes.

Jurors already have been shown some of the state's biggest pieces of evidence, including the 911 call featuring cries for help prosecutors believe came from Martin.

On Thursday, a friend of Martin who had been on the phone with him when he was shot testified about what she heard during his confrontation with Zimmerman.

PayPal Galactic arrives to address the pressing issue of paying in space

Space tourism is coming, and it ain't gonna be cheap. The question is, how are the rich folks aboard such craft going to pay for... stuff? Since weighty cash is a non-starter, Paypal has unveiled the PayPal Galactic initiative with SETI and the Space Tourism Society to prepare for the future of extra-planetary commerce. It'll be launched today at noon EST via livestream (see the More Coverage link) by none other than astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who said that future trips to the moon or Mars will require "as many comforts from home as possible, including how to pay each other." PayPal worked with SETI to hatch the project, which will address meaty issues like a standard space currency, the risk of space fraud and dealing with customer support issues. (Sorry, space customer support issues.) We're pretty sure the conversation won't involve how to pay aliens, but as part of the Galactic launch, PayPal will also announce a new crowdfunding campaign on FundRazr to aid SETI. That'll help the ET-seeking outfit with its astrobiology and radio astronomy research and, hopefully, keep its dishes pointed skyward, so maybe one day we can horse-trade with the Ferengi.

Regulators pave way for biosimilar drug breakthrough

LONDON/ZURICH (Reuters) - European regulators have cleared the way for the first serious threat to the makers of multibillion-dollar biotechnology drugs to treat diseases such as cancer and rheumatoid arthritis.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said on Friday that its experts had backed approval of two copycat versions of Johnson & Johnson and Merck & Co's blockbuster rheumatoid arthritis drug Remicade - the first time a green light has been given for such antibody-based medicines.

Until now, complex biotechnology medicines such as Remicade - given by injection or infusion - have been largely immune from generic competition, unlike conventional pills.

But the EMA's announcement on so-called biosimilars Remsima and Inflectra - made by South Korea's Celltrion and U.S. company Hospira respectively - signals the changing landscape as regulators set out a clearer path for the evidence needed to secure approval of such products.

Celltrion executive Kim Hyoung-ki told reporters on Friday that the company is planning to seek approval in Japan later this year and that an application for U.S. approval is possible in 2015.

PRICE POINT

He said that the company expects to sell Remsima at a 30 percent discount to Remicade, aiming to win a significant chunk of the $6.1 billion sales that the drug racked up for Johnson & Johnson in 2012.

Celltrion also aims to boost sales further with approval in emerging markets and recession-hit countries such as Greece.

Citi analyst Andrew Baum said that European regulators' backing of biosimilar versions of Remicade is also likely increase the perceived risk for Roche's top-selling cancer drugs Rituxan and Herceptin. Roche is trying to protect its existing products by bringing out improved, patented versions of its medicines.

Both Remsima and Inflectra have been recommended for a range of auto-immune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease and psoriasis among others.

Europe has already approved some simpler biosimilars, including copycat versions of human growth hormone and the anemia treatment EPO, but it has yet to approve an antibody drug such as Remicade, which is known generically as infliximab.

Unlike traditional chemical drugs, biotech medicines consist of proteins derived from living organisms that cannot be replicated exactly. Biosimilars, therefore, are more difficult to develop and need more tests to prove they work properly.

Recommendations for marketing approval by the agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use are normally endorsed by the European Commission within a couple of months.

US Cellular launches ZTE Imperial for $0.01 on-contract

Another standard low-end device to round out the carrier's LTE lineup

ZTE ImperialU.S. Cellular is adding the 14th LTE-capable device to its lineup starting today with the ZTE Imperial, a low-end device selling for just $0.01 on-contract. The Imperial is an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean device with a 4-inch WVGA (480x800) display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, sizeable 2500mAh battery, 5MP camera and 4GB of on-board storage (with SDcard support). The software appears to be a relatively basic interpretation of Jelly Bean, along with three capacitive navigation keys to control it.

The ZTE Imperial rounds out the low-end of U.S. Cellular's lineup, with an off-contract price of just $299 although most will end up grabbing it with a 2-year agreement for just a penny. The carrier says it is targeting the device at the first-time smart phone user, and it has a price and feature set that reflects that.

BlackBerry CEO: BBM still coming to iOS before the end of the summer

Digg app updated with Digg Reader, offers a home to all your Google-abandoned RSS feeds

The official Digg app has been updated to support Digg Reader, one of the many new services competing to be the new home for your Google Reader-abandoned RSS feeds. Here's how it works:

Download the Digg app update from the App Store, launch the app, open the basement/sidebar, choose Digg reader, tell it you want to import from Google Reader, log into your Google account to authorize the data transfer, wait for your feeds to fill, and then enjoy all your RSS.

Whether or not this is a good solution, let along the perfect solution, for former Google Reader junkies remains to be seen. For many, Google Reader was more sync-service than app. But it's great to see options, and different takes will almost certainly appeal to different types of users. Things will ultimately shake out, of course, and may the best app win.

If you try out Digg Reader, let me know your thoughts -- is this the RSS reader you've been looking for?

US consumer spending up 0.3 percent in May

(AP) ? U.S. consumers spent more in May as their income rose, encouraging signs after a slow start to the year. But spending was weaker in April, February and January than previously estimated.

The Commerce Department said Thursday that consumer spending rose 0.3 percent last month, nearly erasing a similar decline in April. Income rose 0.5 percent.

At the same time, economists said the downward revisions to spending for three of the first four months of the year signal weaker growth in the April-June quarter, which ends this week.

Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said he thinks growth has slowed in the second quarter at an annual rate of just 1.5 percent. That's down from his previous forecast of a 2 percent rate. Economists at Barclays have cut their forecast from an annual rate of 1.8 percent to a sluggish rate of 1.4 percent.

Tepid growth could keep the Federal Reserve from scaling back its bond purchases later this year. Chairman Ben Bernanke spooked investors last week when he said the Fed will likely slow its bond-buying this year if the economy continues to strengthen. But Bernanke added that if the economy weakens, the Fed won't hesitate to delay its pullback or even step up its bond purchases again.

The bond purchases have helped keep interest rates low.

Dales also noted that the inflation gauge the Fed watches most closely has dropped to a record low of 1.1 percent, well below the Fed's 2 percent target. When inflation falls too low, the Fed normally keeps rates low to try to boost prices.

Economists are hopeful that growth will pick up in the second half of the year, and some recent data have been encouraging. Consumers, benefiting from low inflation, spent more at retail businesses in May, notably for cars, home improvements and sporting goods.

U.S. factories are fielding more orders. Higher home sales and prices are signaling a steady housing recovery. And employers added 175,000 jobs last month, in line with the average job growth over the past 12 months.

Steady job growth has lowered the unemployment rate to 7.6 percent, down from 10 percent in 2009. And this week the Conference Board said a better job market helped lift Americans' confidence in the economy rose to the highest level in 5? years.

Still, on Wednesday the government downgraded its estimate for growth in the January-March quarter to a 1.8 percent annual rate, sharply below its previous estimate of a 2.4 percent rate. The main reason for the revision was consumer spent less than initially estimated. Some economists said the revision suggested that an increase in Social Security taxes this year was squeezing consumers more than expected.

The tax increase has lowered take-home pay for most Americans. A person earning $50,000 a year has about $1,000 less to spend this year. A high-earning couple has up to $4,500 less to spend.
