US consumers do poor job of protecting PCs: report

Consumers in the United States join others in countries such as Singapore, Mexico, Spain and Japan when it comes to having the least-protected personal computers.

Finland ranked as the best of 24 countries monitored by McAfee, which scanned 28 million computers every month for the past year.

"The United States is the fifth least protected country, with 19.32 percent of Americans browsing the Internet without any protection; 12.25 percent of consumers have zero security protection installed; 7.07 percent have security software installed but disabled," the company said in a report.

"The Finns, they got it down; but we're not doing particularly well here in the U.S.," said Gary Davis, McAfee's director of global consumer product marketing, in an interview.

Overall, McAfee researchers said 17 percent of the world "is browsing the Internet completely unprotected," without antivirus or antimalware software.

The company found that "many of the scanned computers have disabled or expired software."

"People tend to say they're protected when they're not because it's the politically correct thing to say, or perhaps they think they're protected because they had trial software, but that has expired," Davis said. And sometimes, users ? especially gamers ? choose to disable anti-virus software because it can slow a computer down, he said.

While McAfee is only too happy to push its products, of course, there is no lack of "freemium AV" software that consumers can download, Davis said.

The latest research contrasts with a survey McAfee did last fall of 3,000 consumers globally, who were asked to put a dollar value on their digital assets. More than a quarter of them said their files? would be "impossible to restore" if lost, and had an average value of $10,014.

"Consumers value their information so highly, yet there are such a high number of
devices unprotected," Davis said.

Among other findings of McAfee's research:

• 83 percent of global PC owners have "working basic security protection."
• Finland was the "most protected, with only 9.7 percent of PCs lacking any security protection."
• Singapore "came out on bottom with 21.75 percent of consumer PCs completely unprotected," and the highest percentage of users ? 11.75 percent ? with "installed, but disabled, security protection."

I'm not a professional musician, but apparently it's a headache for artists to publicize their tourdates on the myriad number of websites and apps that cater to music lovers. Not only is there Facebook and Twitter, but there's YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud and Hype Machine. Enter Songkick, a concert promotion startup that's backed by Sequoia Capital and Index Ventures. They have tons of those little widgets across the web that show when your favorite band is in town. Now they're trying to make it easier for musicians to manage promotions themselves. They've built a product called Tourbox, which connects to a musician's Facebook fan page and automates the publishing for concert dates across the web and in sites like YouTube, Tumblr, Vevo and Spotify. The company counts M83 and Of Montreal among Tourbox's users so far.

PARIS (AP) ? Roger Federer dropped a set before earning his record-breaking 234th Grand Slam match victory to reach the French Open's third round.

Federer eliminated 92nd-ranked Adrian Ungur of Romania 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-3 Wednesday to break a tie with Jimmy Connors for most career wins at major tournaments in the Open era, which began in 1968.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion is now 234-35 in tennis' top four tournaments, an .870 winning percentage.

Ungur, meanwhile, is 1-1; the French Open was his Grand Slam debut.

Seeded third this year at Roland Garros, where he won the 2009 title, Federer is on course for a semifinal showdown against No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who won in straight sets Wednesday.

Beryl hits Fla. as strongest May storm since 1908

Tropical Storm Beryl made landfall in Florida overnight amid a weekend of wild weather that included thunderstorms over D.C. forcing officials to cancel the annual Memorial Day concert and extreme heat causing one NASCAR driver's boot to "melt" midrace. NBC's Mike Seidel reports.

Updated at 8:29 a.m. ET: Tropical Storm Beryl, downgraded to a depression on Monday, threatened to snarl traffic on Memorial Day, bringing?drenching rain, winds and the possibility of flooding to the southeastern U.S. coast.

The storm made landfall in Florida early Monday near Jacksonville Beach around 12:10 a.m. ET with near-hurricane-strength winds of 70 mph, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

NBC News reported that made Beryl the strongest May tropical cyclone to hit the U.S. since a hurricane that?hit the Outer Banks of North Carolina with winds of 75 mph on May 29, 1908. However, that fact speaks?more to the scarcity of tropical activity in May as opposed to Beryl's strength.?

Wind gusts in excess of 60 mph were reported along the northeast coast of Florida as Beryl roared ashore, causing some tree damage and triggering power outages, weather.com reported.

The weather system was expected to continue dumping rain over parts of Florida and Georgia on Monday. It was forecast to weaken as it moves inland Monday and Tuesday, and as a frontal system comes down from the Great Lakes, Beryl was expected to move out into the Atlantic Ocean.

"We're seeing about the best that Beryl has right now as far as its winds are concerned, with winds about 70 mph," forecaster Al Sandrik said late Sunday. "The model shows significant weakening of the storm in 12 hours."

But the weather system could complicate holiday traffic Monday after wrecking some Memorial Day weekend plans Sunday. It caused shoreline campers to pack up and head inland and led to the cancellation of some events.

A tropical storm warning remained in effect early Monday for coastal areas from Flagler Beach, Fla. to Edisto Beach, S.C. At?8 a.m. ET, the storm was?50 miles west of Jacksonville, Fla., and winds had decreased to?40 mph. A tropical storm warning was?earlier discontinued north of the Savannah River in Georgia.

'Stay alert'
Beryl was expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of rain to parts, with some areas getting as much as 12 inches. Forecasters said the storm surge and high tide could bring 2 to 4 feet of flooding in northeastern Florida and Georgia, and 1 to 2 feet in southern South Carolina.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott urged Florida residents in the affected areas to "stay alert and aware."

"Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to bring heavy rain and winds, and it is vital to continue to monitor local news reports and listen to the advice of local emergency management officials," Scott said in a statement Sunday night.

Report: National Weather Service misappropriated $43 million

Campers at Cumberland Island, Ga., which is reachable only by boat, were told to leave by 4:45 p.m. Sunday. The island has a number of undeveloped beaches and forests popular with campers.

In Jacksonville, Fla., Sunday's jazz festival and Memorial Day ceremony were canceled. Workers were also out clearing tree limbs and debris that could be tossed about by the storm's winds. Winds had already knocked down tree limbs and power lines in parts of coastal Georgia, leaving hundreds without electricity.

Rip currents
But business was booming at the Red Dog Surf Shop in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., where customers flocked to buy boards and wax in anticipation of the storm's high waves. Officials along the coast warned of rip currents, waves and high tides ? all of which can be dangerous but also tend to attract adventurous surfers. The waters had already become dangerous in South Carolina, where rescuers were searching for a missing swimmer.

The Coast Guard said crews in Charleston Harbor rescued three people and a dog from a sinking recreational vessel late Sunday morning.

The storm will deliver a dose of much-needed rainfall to parts of the Southeast that are currently suffering from drought, according to weather.com

Northeast Florida is suffering "exceptional drought" and the?rain could soak the parched areas between northeastern Florida and southeastern North Carolina.?

The southeastern U.S. wasn't the only part of the country dealing with troublesome weather.

In Washington, the annual Memorial Day concert on the National Mall on Sunday night was cut short as a line of thunderstorms approached the District of Columbia from the northwest. Mike Musher of the National Weather Service said the thunderstorms developed over Pennsylvania as part of the weather system that created record high temperatures in the Midwest over the weekend.

He invested $3 million of his own money in order to get the company started (his net worth is $60 million) and set up shop in Massachusetts. In short order, 38 studios grew to over 400 employees and the company was in the end-run of the development of the game.

In November 2010, Schilling moved the company to Rhode Island to utilize a $75 million loan from the government at low interest (but, apparently, extremely high risk). Finally, the game was released on February 7, 2012 and sold 1.2 million copies. By May, however, unable to repay their loan to Rhode Island, and unable to make payroll, the entire staff of 38 studios was laid off.

Enter the first, and perhaps most glaring, problem - According to the Governor of Rhode Island, 38 Studios would need to sell 3 million copies of the game in order to have any return on investment. To put this in perspective, Final Fantasy XIII, a successful installment of an historically franchise, sold 4.82 million copies and is the thirteenth game in the series. For any startup company to expect to sell 3 million copies of a game with a new IP is, quite frankly, an insane notion.

There are lots of questions regarding where the studio went wrong, but there are a few things that have stuck out as red flags for the entire situation.

What does this show about what type of person Schilling truly is? While he was still playing for the Red Sox, he spoke out about his personal beliefs during the 2004 elections (Schilling actively campaigned for then President Bush?s reelection). His endorsement of such politicians as former President Bush, Senators Scott Brown and John McCain clearly indicate his Republican-leaning beliefs. The standpoints that all of these politicians have in common is the want for a smaller government. They believe that the government should stay out of people?s personal lives and shouldn?t be interfering with private businesses.

This completely contradicts Schilling?s history with 38 Studios, as his company not only willingly accepted, but campaigned to receive $75 million from the government. Furthermore, once Schilling received the money from the loan, he immediately repaid himself the $3 million that he initially put in. As a result, his company?s failure doesn?t affect him financially whatsoever. Now, while it is perfectly understandable that reimbursement should be given over the course of time, Schilling has shown that he values his own financial gains over those of his company or its employees. Instead of re-investing cash into his company to continue his ?dream? of creating this new world of Amalur, he made decisions that bankrupted his company, failed to repay the state of Rhode Island, and has led to the layoff of more than 400 employees.

This development will put huge economic strain on not only the employees themselves, but the government as well. The state of Rhode Island now has to pay 400 people unemployment for upwards of 99 weeks, has given a company $75 million for investments that it cannot pay back (money which could be allocated to paying unemployment for said employees), and increases the unemployment rate in a state that is already under tremendous financial and economic stress.

Oh, and how did he let the employees know they were fired? A cold, calculated email to inform all of his employees that they are officially laid off as of that day:

"The Company is experiencing an economic downturn. To avoid further losses and possibility of retrenchment, the Company has decided that a company-wide lay off is absolutely necessary.

These layoffs are non-voluntary and non-disciplinary.

This is your official notice of lay off, effective today, Thursday, May 24th, 2012."

The outcome of this calamity is that Curt Schilling is the only person who has made out at all from the failure of his company. He has recently taken to twitter to promote the upcoming game in the Armalur series (code named Copernicus) and to try and make the case that he never received a bailout. There are a million different things he could have done with his company to keep it afloat. The reality is that there are nearly 400 people who are unemployed in Rhode Island right now while their boss sits comfortably on a bed made of $60 million. If the game made money, he was set to make millions. It didn?t and Curt Shilling shares absolutely none of that pain. While some may make the argument that Schilling may have just been a bad businessman, this goes FAR beyond that.

Schilling isn?t the only one who deserves criticism, however. The state of Rhode Island loaned this money to the company without doing enough investigating into the business model of the company. By all accounts, the game?s reviews ranged from above-average to great, and its sales were extremely competitive for an initial release. Furthermore, the game received widespread publicity before this calamity just because of Curt Shilling?s name being associated with it. Anyone who knew what the company was planning to do and how much the company had spent on creating this game (which the government would have access to during the negotiations for the loan) and didn?t question the business model of 38 Studios deserves to be fired immediately.

The victims of this hypocrisy and insanity are the employees and the citizens of Rhode Island who had nothing to do with the collapse and mismanagement of this company. Thankfully, other companies are contacting former employees and telling them to apply to gaming jobs with them. However, that is not a guarantee of work. I truly hope that Schilling does the right thing and make amends with his past, but my hopes are not high. I, for one, will go out of my way to never support anything that Curt Schilling does for as long as I have breath in my lungs and a pulse in my body.

APNewsBreak: FEMA trailer litigation nears end

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? A class-action settlement agreement has been reached to resolve nearly all the remaining court claims over allegations that government-issued trailers exposed Gulf Coast residents to hazardous fumes after Hurricane Katrina, a lead plaintiffs' attorney said Monday.

In a court filing late Monday, plaintiffs' lawyers and several companies that manufactured FEMA trailers after the 2005 storm asked U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt to approve an expanded version of a multimillion-dollar deal initially announced in April.

A separate agreement with four FEMA contractors that installed or refurbished trailers will be filed Tuesday, lead plaintiffs' attorney Gerald Meunier told The Associated Press.

Nearly two dozen FEMA trailer makers agreed last month to pay a total of $14.8 million to resolve claims over elevated formaldehyde levels in FEMA trailers following hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Monday's expanded settlement agreement includes claims against trailer manufacturers Gulf Stream Coach Inc., Forest River Inc., Jayco Inc. and Monaco Coach Corp. Representatives of the four companies didn't immediately respond to emails seeking comment.

FEMA contractors Shaw Environmental Inc., Bechtel Corp., Fluor Enterprises Inc. and CH2M Hill Constructors Inc. also have reached agreements with the plaintiffs' lawyers, according to Meunier and a lawyer for the contractors.

Contractors' attorney David Kurtz said the companies are proud of the roles they played in response to Katrina.

"We agree, however, that all of the parties are best served by settling this matter and saving the time and expense of further litigation," Kurtz added.

The amount of money that would be paid by each of the eight companies wasn't immediately disclosed.

Residents of Louisiana, Texas, Alabama and Mississippi who lived in FEMA trailers after the 2005 hurricanes are eligible to participate.

Engelhardt is expected to hold a fairness hearing on the proposed settlement on Sept. 27. If he approves the deal, a group of Texas residents' claims against the Federal Emergency Management Agency would be the only formaldehyde-related claims that haven't been settled or dismissed by the judge, Meunier said.

Meunier estimates that roughly 60,000 plaintiffs could benefit from the entire settlement. He said the deal is a "positive development" for residents even if the amount of compensation is lower than many had anticipated when the case started nearly five years ago.

"But I think the outcome here reflects the realities of the case," Meunier said.

Meunier said the plaintiffs' lawyers tested a sample of FEMA trailers but couldn't test every unit occupied by every plaintiff.

"I think that presented a challenge," he said. "It was our belief that to go on trying thousands of cases with that kind of challenge in presenting the evidence ... was not going to be a very satisfactory alternative for the clients."

Daniel Balhoff, a court-appointed mediator who helped broker the proposed settlement with FEMA trailer makers, said in a court filing Monday that he believes the deal is "fair, adequate and reasonable."

"The plaintiffs are faced with significant burden of proof issues with respect to causation," he said. "For many plaintiffs, the manufactured home no longer exists or can no longer be located. Further, many individual plaintiffs faced causation problems due to the fact that they were smokers or had independent bases separate from formaldehyde exposure for their health issues."

Formaldehyde, a chemical commonly found in building materials, can cause breathing problems and is classified as a carcinogen. Government tests on hundreds of trailers in Louisiana and Mississippi found formaldehyde levels that were, on average, about five times what people are exposed to in most modern homes.

FEMA, which isn't a party in the settlement, downplayed formaldehyde risks for months before those test results were announced in February 2008. As early as 2006, trailer occupants began reporting headaches, nosebleeds and difficulty breathing.

The federal agency provided trailers or mobile homes to more than 144,000 families after the hurricanes. Plaintiffs' lawyers have accused the trailer makers of using shoddy building materials and methods in a rush to meet the agency's unprecedented demand for temporary housing.

In October 2007, Engelhardt was picked to oversee hundreds of consolidated lawsuits and tens of thousands of related claims. Since then, the case has generated more than 25,000 docket entries and resulted in three trials for individual claims. The juries in all three trials sided with the companies and didn't award any damages.

The settlement isn't the first in the litigation. Last year, a group of companies that manufactured mobile homes for FEMA after Katrina agreed to pay $2.6 million to resolve thousands of related claims. Mobile homes are larger and sturdier than travel trailers, which housed the majority of storm victims and are more prone to elevated levels of formaldehyde.

Fleetwood Enterprises Inc., which supplied FEMA with travel trailers before it filed for bankruptcy in 2009, agreed in 2010 to a settlement resolving about 7,500 to 8,000 claims. Terms of that deal weren't disclosed.

Engelhardt dismissed claims against FEMA by residents of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Plaintiffs' attorneys have asked the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans to overturn Engelhardt's dismissal of the Louisiana claims. The appeals court previously upheld his dismissal of the Mississippi and Alabama claims.

U.N. says over 92 killed in Syria, 32 of them children

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The United Nations said on Saturday that more than 92 people were killed in what activists described as an artillery barrage by government forces in the worst violence since the start of a U.N. peace plan to slow the flow of blood in Syria's uprising.

The bloodied bodies of children, some with their skulls split open, were shown in footage posted to YouTube purporting to show the victims of the shelling in the central town of Houla on Friday. The sound of wailing filled the room.

The carnage underlined just how far Syria is from any negotiated path out of the 14-month-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

"This morning U.N. military and civilian observers went to Houla and counted more than 32 children under the age of 10 and over 60 adults killed," the head of U.N. team monitoring the ceasefire - which has yet to take hold - said.

"The observers confirmed from examination of ordinances the use of artillery tank shells," Major General Robert Mood said in a statement, without elaborating. "Whoever started, whoever responded and whoever carried out this deplorable act of violence should be held responsible."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned the attack.

"Those who perpetrated this atrocity must be identified and held to account," she said in a statement. "And the United States will work with the international community to intensify our pressure on Assad and his cronies, whose rule by murder and fear must come to an end."

In a statement, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon demanded "the government of Syria immediately cease the use of heavy weapons in population centers."

Activists said Assad's forces shelled the town of Houla on Friday evening after security forces killed a protester and following skirmishes between troops and fighters from the Sunni Muslim-led insurgency fighting Syria's rulers, who belong to the minority Alawite sect.

A British-based opposition group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said Houla residents fled, fearing more shelling. It said one person was killed in the northern town of Saraqeb when troops fired on a protest against the killing.

Syrian state television aired some of the footage disseminated by activists after the killing in Houla, calling the bodies victims of a massacre committed by "terrorist" gangs.

It also showed video of bodies with what looked like gunshot wounds to the head, sprawled on bloodstained mattresses.

Activists distributed footage appearing to show protests in Aleppo, the largest city in the north.

A member of the fragmented exile group that says it speaks for Syria's political opposition said Assad's forces had killed "entire families" in Houla in addition to the shelling.

"The Syrian National Council (SNC) urges the U.N. Security Council to call for an emergency meeting ... and to determine the responsibility of the United Nations in the face of such mass killings," SNC spokeswoman Bassma Kodmani said.

Although a 6-week-old ceasefire plan negotiated by former U.N. secretary-general Kofi Annan has failed to stop the violence, the United Nations is nearing full deployment of a 300-strong unarmed observer force meant to monitor a truce.

The plan calls for a truce, withdrawal of troops from cities and dialogue between the government and opposition.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius condemned the violence as a "massacre" and said he wanted to arrange a meeting in Paris of the Friends of Syria, a group that brings together Western and Arab countries keen to remove Assad.

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said he was coordinating a "strong response" to the killings and would call for the Security Council to meet in the coming days.

United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Sheikh Abudllah bin Zayed al-Nahayan requested an urgent meeting of the Arab League while Arab League head Nabil Elaraby called the killing in Houla a "horrific crime."

Elaraby urged the U.N. Security Council - where Russia and China have protected Syria - to "stop the escalation of killing and violence by armed gangs and government military forces."

Syria calls the revolt a "terrorist" conspiracy run from abroad, a veiled reference to Sunni Muslim Gulf powers that want to see weapons provided to an insurgency led by Syria's majority Sunnis against Assad.

"TERRORIST GROUPS"

Ban said on Friday that recent bomb attacks may have been the work of "established terrorist groups" and urged states not to supply arms to either the government or rebel forces.

"Those who may contemplate supporting any side with weapons, military training or other military assistance, must reconsider such options to enable a sustained cessation of violence," he told the Security Council in a letter.

The United Nations has accused Assad's forces and insurgents alike of grave human rights abuses, including summary executions and torture.

Ban also has expressed fear that Syria's conflict will destabilize neighboring Lebanon, whose delicate sect-based politics has been shaken by tensions among Lebanese foes and friends of the uprising in Syria.

In the latest episode, gunmen in northern Syria snatched a group of Lebanese Shi'ites this week as they were returning from a religious pilgrimage, deepening unrest after sectarian fighting in northern Lebanon and battles between pro- and anti-Syrian Sunni factions in the capital over the last two weeks.

Uncertainty over their increased tension in Beirut on Saturday, a day after Lebanon's top officials said the release of the hostages and their return home was imminent. Shi'ites had blocked roads and burned tires after hearing of the abduction.

The prime minister said on Friday afternoon they had been freed but by Saturday there was still no sign of them. A member of the SNC said they still were in captivity, further angering a crowd that had gathered at Beirut's airport to meet them.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Sectional action resumes on Memorial Day for several area schools. Here is the breakdown of the top match-ups on Monday morning.

Fresh off a perfect sectional win over Marion, the Lafayette Jeff Bronchos now turn their attention to the Harrison Raiders. Jeff knocked off Harrison twice during the regular season. However, the Bronchos understand it's hard to beat the same team three times in the same season, especially when that team is your biggest rival.

?Harrison, they just always come out and play, they always bring their best and they always talk on the field. They are always in the game and it is always a tough game for us. I'm really looking forward to it,? said Jeff junior Peter Ripke.

?Not only is it hard to beat the same team three times but they weren?t easy wins when we did it either. I think we are very well matched up both teams, they probably feeling just as good as we are in this situation because both games we played so far they had an opportunity to win those games too.
