BOSTON (AP) ? Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has fractured a bone in his lower leg, the latest in a series of health issues that have dogged the city's longest-serving chief executive.
Spokeswoman Dorothy Joyce says Menino twisted his ankle on his way to an event Friday morning, and an X-ray revealed the fracture.
Surgeons at Brigham and Women's Hospital repaired the bone Saturday morning.
Doctors say the 70-year-old Menino tolerated the surgery well and without complication. He will require the use of crutches for the next couple of months.
Menino announced more than two weeks ago that he won't seek re-election to an unprecedented sixth term.
He has had persistent health problems, including a six-week hospital stay last year to treat a respiratory infection and a compression fracture in his spine.
