Oil rises toward $104 ahead of Fed statement

LONDON (AP) ? The price of oil staged a modest recovery Wednesday, a day after hitting a four-week low, but traders say bigger gains would likely be short-lived.

Benchmark oil for August delivery was up 17 cents to $103.27 per barrel in midday trading in Europe in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.47 Tuesday to finish at $103.08 per barrel, the lowest closing price since July 3.

Traders are waiting to see if the Energy Department will report another draw in oil supplies after a surprisingly large drop of 30 million barrels over the past month. However, oil supplies remain high compared with the five-year average, and that will constrain the price of crude.

"Energy prices have been supported in recent weeks by renewed optimism about global demand and a revival of concerns about the geopolitical situation in the Middle East. However, we do not expect this to last," Jessica Hinds of Capital Economics said in a commentary.

"On the demand side, although US crude stocks have fallen by more than expected recently, we would be wary of placing too much weight on this development," Hinds said.

Later Wednesday, the Federal Reserve will give an updated assessment of the U.S. economy when it wraps up a two-day meeting in Washington. The government will also release the first reading of second-quarter gross domestic product growth. Analysts expect the economy to have expanded more slowly last quarter compared with the 1.8 percent growth reported for the first three months of the year.

On Friday the release of employment data for July will be examined for hints about future energy demand in the world's No. 1 economy.

Brent crude, which is traded in London, fell 69 cents to $106.22.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline fell 3 cents to $2.94 a gallon.

? Heating oil was broadly unchanged at $3.01 a gallon.

? Natural gas rose 1 cent to $3.44 per 1,000 cubic feet.

ADP: Private employers add 200,000 jobs this month

WASHINGTON?A private survey shows U.S. businesses created a healthy 200,000 jobs this month.

The payroll company ADP said Wednesday that companies hired in July at the fastest pace since December. And it revised up its estimate of the number of jobs the private sector created in June from 188,000 to 198,000.

Professional and businesses services companies added 49,000 jobs this month, construction companies 22,000. But manufacturers shed 5,000.

Small businesses?those with fewer than 50 employees?added 82,000 jobs.

"Job growth is consistently good?solid across industries," said Mark Zandi, chief economist with Moody's Analytics, which compiled the jobs report for ADP.

The healthy hiring suggests that the economy is handling tax cuts that took effect in January and federal spending cuts that began in March "more gracefully than I expected," Zandi said.

He noted that the drop in manufacturing jobs probably reflected cuts by defense contractors pinched by a tighter federal budget. A weak global economy has also hurt U.S. exporters.

The ADP report is derived from payroll data and tracks private employment. It does not report government hiring.

ADP's survey has diverged at times from the U.S. Labor Department's more comprehensive monthly jobs report. The department's employment report for July will be released Friday. It's expected to show that the economy added 183,000 jobs in July after adding 195,000 in June, according to a survey of economists by FactSet.

"The picture for the US labor market seems to have improved in the past couple of months or so," Annalisa Piazza, an economist at Newedge Strategy, said in a research note.

Zandi cautioned that recent job growth has come disproportionately in lower-paying businesses such as retailers, hotels and restaurants.

Israel, Palestinians strive for peace deal within nine months

WASHINGTON | Tue Jul 30, 2013 11:57pm BST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Israeli and Palestinian negotiators on Tuesday gave themselves about nine months to try to reach an agreement on ending their conflict of more than six decades in U.S.-brokered peace talks.

The two sides held their first peace negotiations in nearly three years in Washington on Monday and Tuesday, a diplomatic victory for Secretary of State John Kerry, but one that foreign policy analysts believe has low chances of success.

Flanked by the chief negotiators for both sides, Kerry said he was well aware of the doubts but described the initial talks, which focused on process rather than substance, as "constructive and positive."

Speaking after the meetings, which included a closed-door session with President Barack Obama at the White House as well as talks between the two sides without U.S. officials present, Kerry said peace was possible despite the obstacles.

"While I understand the scepticism, I don't share it," Kerry said with Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat at his side, adding all so-called final-status issues to end the conflict were on the table.

""We cannot pass along to another generation the responsibility of ending a conflict that is in our power to resolve in our time," he added. "They should not be expected to bear that burden, and we should not leave it to them."

The talks will go to a second round by the middle of August, Kerry said, adding that "our objective will be to achieve a final status agreement over the course of the next nine months."

Kerry said Israel had agreed to take unspecified steps to ease the lives of Palestinians in the West Bank, which is ruled by a Palestinian Authority dominated by Abbas' Fatah faction, and the Gaza Strip, where the Islamist Hamas group holds sway.

Speaking to reporters later, a senior U.S. official declined to identify these but said they aimed to improve economic growth and added "it's more than just removing roadblocks."

LITTLE DETAIL ABOUT TALKS

U.S. officials declined to describe this week's talks in any detail, saying secrecy was vital, and they said they did not yet know whether they would take part in the talks planned within two weeks in Israel or the Palestinian Territories.

The United States is seeking to broker an agreement on a two-state solution, in which Israel would exist peacefully alongside a new Palestinian state created in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, lands occupied by the Israelis since a 1967 war. The last direct talks collapsed in late 2010 over Israel's building of Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

The major "final status" issues to be resolved include borders, the future of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, the fate of Palestinian refugees and the status of Jerusalem.

Livni, the chief Israeli negotiator, sought to cast the talks in a positive light.

"It's going to be hard, with ups and downs. But I can assure you that ... in these negotiations, it's not our intention to argue about the past, but to create solutions and make decisions for the future," she said.

Erekat said it was time to end the conflict. "Palestinians have suffered enough, and no one benefits more from the success of this endeavour more than Palestinians," he said. "It's time for the Palestinian people to have an independent, sovereign state of their own."

The resumption of negotiations is a rare moment of good news in the Middle East for the Obama administration, which has struggled to formulate a policy to try to end the civil war in Syria or to facilitate a democratic transition in Egypt.

Kerry, who has prodded and coaxed the two sides to resume negotiations in a flurry of visits to the Middle East during his less than six months in office, urged the Israelis and Palestinians to embrace "reasonable, principled compromise."

ABBAS UNDERLINES TOUGH ISSUES

However, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas pointed to some of the tough issues still to be discussed, saying no Israeli settlers or border forces could remain in a future Palestinian state and that Palestinians deem illegal all Jewish settlement building within the land occupied in the 1967 Middle East war.

"In a final resolution, we would not see the presence of a single Israeli - civilian or soldier - on our lands," Abbas said in a briefing to mostly Egyptian journalists.

Foreign policy experts voiced deep doubts about the chances of success for the peace talks, the latest in a long series of U.S.-brokered efforts that have so far failed, including former President Bill Clinton's 2000 Camp David push.

Among the many obstacles to any agreement are split opinions within both the Israeli and Palestinian publics.

Resuming talks is unpopular among some of Abbas' supporters in Fatah, let alone Hamas, which has condemned the effort. The politics are also difficult for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with some of his coalition partners opposed to creating a Palestinian state.

"The two warning signs for me are, first, you don't have the beginning of permissive politics in either Israel or Palestine," said Jon Alterman, head of the Middle East program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank. "This is not a diplomatic problem. It is fundamentally a political problem."

Second, "a secretary of state is only as effective as the president he works for wants him to be and the president's body language has been to focus on the domestic economy and on disentangling the United States from wars in the Middle East," he added.

2013 MVPs Selected & Named: 9 Individuals in 7 ... - Franchising.com

Franchising is a tough business, and succeeding even tougher. But with a keen eye on the bottom line, customer service, and community involvement, there are a handful of multi-unit franchisees who rise to the top. We like to call them superstars and once a year Multi-Unit Franchisee magazine recognizes a select few with our Annual MVP Awards. This year we carefully selected 9 individuals who have demonstrated character, innovation, and sacrifice within their markets and brands. We'd also like to thank our sponsor, Comcast, for their support in making these awards possible. Here's a little more about each of this year's winners. Their full profiles follow.

William Ray BruceWilliam Ray Bruce
Noble Cause
Abundant Brands; Subway, Costa Vida, Roxberry Juice, and Big Al's BBQ

William Ray Bruce has always had a "do good vibe" philosophy to business. Abundant Brands is comprised of more than 280 Subways, Costa Vidas, Roxberry Juice, and Big Al's BBQ in Utah. So it's perhaps not surprising that in 2012 he teamed up with The Rescue Mission of Salt Lake City to provide meals to the hungry and homeless one day a week. He was inspired to donate the extra food for meals at the shelter after seeing a documentary about hungry people in the U.S. "diving" into trash bins to subsist on what is discarded daily by restaurants. He began the program in February of 2012. He delivers enough for about 450 meals every Thursday. More recently, he has begun "Subway Tuesdays" where he uses leftover bread and meats to feed those in need. His "do good vibe" is the cornerstone of his 280-plus franchise units.

Guillermo PeralesGuillermo Perales
American Dream
Sun Holdings; Burger King, Popeyes, Arby's, Golden Corral, and CiCi's

Guillermo Perales thinks big. He's about to pass 400 units and he provides jobs to more than 10,000 employees. The native of Mexico came to America in search of success and he found it. His Sun Holdings, LLC was ranked among top 10 in the Restaurant Finance Monitor in 2012 and he is the largest Latino restaurant franchisee in the U.S. He also co-founded the Latin American/DFW Fund to raise money for Latino-based programs and initiatives. And he supports education by providing incentives for Latino students to stay in school. His Certificate of Achievement Award program provides five million free meal certificates every year to local students through the program. He also recognizes armed services veterans with free meals at his restaurants on Veteran's Day each year.

Danny SonenshineDanny Sonenshine
Spirit of Franchising
Far West Restaurant Group; Wingstop

Danny Sonenshine operates 21 Wingstop restaurants in Southern California. He opened one of the very first locations in Los Angeles (there are now 60 locations in the market) and recently opened the second test concept Wingstop Sports location in the country. He serves as president of the Wingstop Southern California Advertising Co-op and the Wingstop Franchise Advisory Council. Now he's got his sights set on Hawaii and Guam, where he has the rights to develop. He loves being a part of his community and spearheading things like a Wingstop SoCal sponsorship with the LA Lakers, Dodgers, and Angels. He provides a great example for how franchisees can get involved in their communities and be successful business operators.

Steve BalivaSteve Baliva
Noble Cause
Partner, of Metz Culinary; TGI Friday's, Ruth's Chris Steak House, and Wolfgang Puck Express

Steve Baliva brings consistency to operations and focuses on bottom line profitability in all 3 of his brands. He has 13 T.G.I. Friday's; 1 Ruth's Chris Steak House; 1Wolfgang Puck Express; and 1 Lucky's Sporthouse. His team and communication skills have helped to build a strong, healthy business, that is characterized by growth. He believes it's important not just to operate a successful business but to be involved in the community, and he demonstrated that during the recent Hurricane Sandy that struck the east coast. During the natural disaster, two of his stores lost power but that didn't stop him. He was in the middle of things helping his employees move the food to other locations, working shifts to help fill in, donating and delivering endless amounts of food from their TGIF to shelters of those affected - including his employees.

Samantha GoldsmithSamantha Goldsmith
Influencer
Goldsmith Companies; Red Mango

It's taken 25-year-old Samantha Goldsmith less than three years to open 10 Red Mango locations on her native Long Island. That quick start approach makes her the healthy yogurt system's youngest franchisee and largest multi-unit owner, and has made Long Island the single largest market for the brand. She's loved the brand's healthy products since day one and is a big believer in marketing. She has used Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare accounts to promote her store growth. She's something of a rock star at her store grand openings and the recipient of the Influencer Award. "It's great when young people come to the manager and ask if I'm there because they want to talk to me about being successful in business," she says.

Joe HertzmanJoe Hertzman
Innovation
The Radcliff Group; Rally's

Joe Hertzman opened his first Rally's restaurant 28 years ago. Today he operates 24 Papa John's; 13 Rally's; and 7 Long John Silver's. He's always been a bit of an innovator. Last year he played a critical role in developing the brand's Peak 150 program to improve lunch performance. He also advocated a waffle cone be added to the chain's new Cold Creations menu; a product that has differentiated Checkers/Rally's from its competition, wowed guests, and driven sales.

He's an influential leader on the Franchise Advisory Council, and in 2012, won the Sustained Sales Growth award for achieving 41 percent sales growth on a five-year basis across his entire business. But it's his innovative spirit that has earned him the Franchisee of the Year Award from Rally's/Checkers.

Spencer SmithSpencer Smith
Role Model
The Smith Group; Aaron's

Not all role models are flashy and charismatic. Sometimes the best ones are thoughtful and soft-spoken. Spencer Smith is such a leader. The Colorado multi-unit, multi-brand franchisee has earned his success by "following the program" and the Golden Rule. And it's all paid off. A staunch family man who grew up working at his father's tire store and on the family farm, believes that you can diligently follow the franchise system and have a spirit of innovation or entrepreneurship. Smith, who opened 39 Aaron's stores in eight years and nine months, also owns two Big O Tires. He succeeds by treating his employees and customers the same way he would want to be treated coupled with execution and delivery of service.

Kevin and Laurel WilkersonKevin and Laurel Wilkerson
Veteran Entrepreneurship Award
Marco's Pizza

Kevin and Laurel Wilkerson served a combined 44 years in the U.S. Army. That, they say, prepared them for life in franchising. They've been in the Marco's Pizza system for 3-and-a-half years now and are getting results. In September 2012, they had the highest opening sales of any Marco's in the country. In April 2013, they had the second highest opening sales of any Marco's in the U.S. In 2011, Kevin was selected as the Area Representative of the Year for Marco's. And in 2012, one of their units was acknowledged for being in the top 10 in sales for the year. The couple rely on tools like gorilla marketing and direct mail to build business at their 7 locations. Kevin served as the inaugural President of the Area Rep Leadership Council (ARLC) and worked with the franchisor to create meaningful and lasting improvements to the system. He has also been instrumental in training many new franchisees for the Marcos system, even attending many of the new franchisees' store openings to lend a helping hand.

MediaTek's MT8135 SoC does dual-core big.LITTLE MP, packs PowerVR Series6 GPU

MediaTek's MT8135 SoC does bigLITTLE with dual CortexA15 and dual CortexA7

It'll be a while before MediaTek's true octa-core SoC makes its glorious arrival, but for the time being, the company's unveiling something just as interesting -- and perhaps more practical. The new MT8135 announced today is a "quad-core" SoC aimed at "the middle- to high-end tier of the tablet OEM market." We quote "quad-core," because it actually consists of two clusters: dual Cortex-A15 cores and dual Cortex-A7 cores. But the good news is that unlike the original big.LITTLE configuration where only one cluster can operate at any given time (depending on how heavy the workload is), MediaTek's confirmed that it has implemented big.LITTLE MP ("MP" as in multi-processing) in the MT8135, meaning both the A15 and the A7 clusters can operate simultaneously.

Another highlight of this MT8135 is that it'll be one of the first SoCs -- alongside LG's H13 (which we've seen first-hand), Renesas' APE6 and Renesas' R-Car H2 -- to come with Imagination Technologies' almighty PowerVR Series6 GPU. Specifically, this is the PowerVR G6200 which, as part of the MT8135, can apparently deliver "up to four times more ALU (arithmetic logic unit) horsepower" than the Series5XT GPU on the cheaper, quad-A7 MT8125. And unsurprisingly, the MT8135 gets the same Miracast wireless video goodie given to the MT8125; though it's also worth noting that the latter only supports LPDDR2 RAM instead of the more powerful LPDDR3.

Sadly, there's no further information regarding availability, but you can kill some time by checking out more technical details in the video (with benchmarks) and press releases after the break.

Papiss Cisse's Nike football boots wrongly have 'Sisse' on them

By Graeme Yorke

|

Joe Kinnear's repeated mispronunciation of names has already caused widespread embarrassment throughout Newcastle.

That Papiss Cisse's new football boots have come with the name 'Sisse' wrongly embossed on them will only increase that embarrassment, even if this time it is Nike who's responsible.

Newcastle team-mate Sammy Ameobi, apparently amused by the incident, uploaded the picture of Cisse's questionable boots onto Twitter and commented: 'Well, that's awkward'.

Who? Papiss Cisse's Nike boots have wrongly come with 'Sisse' on them, instead of his actual surname

Who? Papiss Cisse's Nike boots have wrongly come with 'Sisse' on them, instead of his actual surname

Cisse's pre-season has already been mired in controversy. The striker had rowed with Newcastle after refusing to wear kit from the club's new sponsor, Wonga.

He insisted it compromised his Muslim religious beliefs and even missed a training camp in Portugal while fighting his corner.

And, in addition to his name being mispelt on his ?160 football boots, Newcastle's new director of football Kinnear mispronounced his name as 'Sissy' during an earlier high-profile interview.

Nate Silver Explains How Nerds Can Be Good At Baseball And Football Too, Using Math

ESPNInspirational Things

nate silver sportsThe more we?re hearing about Nate Silver?s new deal with the Worldwide Leader, the more we?re loving it. If Silver?s own words are to be believed, the new 538 website will be a shot in the arm for a company that otherwise is relying on Keith Olbermann to beat back Regis Philbin et al at Fox Sports 1.

Silver did a Q&A on Deadspin this afternoon to talk about his new endeavor, and while we were intrigued by the answers he gave regarding the site ? they?re hiring, for example! ? we loved this bit about his time playing sports when he was younger:

Q: How far can you punt a football?

Nate Silver: Basically the only way that I excelled at sports as a youth was to exploit others? ineptitude, at the risk of being called a pussy. For instance, I had something like a .633 on-base percentage the last year I played baseball (8th, I think) because I knew that I couldn?t hit, but I also knew that the pitchers couldn?t pitch, so I?d never swing at anything unless I was down 0-2. Likewise, in my neighborhood touch football league, it was considered uncouth to run instead of pass, but I was pretty fast and the running game was pretty hard to stop when everyone was used to dropping back into coverage.

Genius. How many times did you strike out in high school on pitches way out of the strike zone? How many first down Hail Mary?s did you dumbass neighbor launch when you played street football? How many low-percentage two pointers did you jack up over the years? Yeah, math kinda sucks, we know ? but if nerdy guys are using it to their advantage in order to win sports games? well, who?s the nerd then?

Hillary Clinton to get documentary treatment

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Hillary Rodham Clinton's life is getting the documentary treatment.

CNN Films said Monday that it plans a feature-length film on the former first lady and secretary of state to premiere next year. It will look at Clinton's professional and personal lives.

The film from Oscar-winning director and producer Charles Ferguson will have a theatrical run before airing on CNN.

Last weekend, NBC announced the four-hour miniseries "Hillary" starring Diane Lane. No air date was announced, but it is timed to precede the 2016 presidential election.

Clinton hasn't said whether she'll make another run for the Democratic nomination for president.

NBC says the miniseries will track Clinton's life and career from 1998 to the present.

Bob Mansfield, Apple's Secret Executive Leading ... - Business Insider

Yesterday, Apple executive Bob Mansfield vanished from the company's page listing its top executives.?

"Bob is no longer going to be on Apple?s executive team, but will remain at Apple working on special projects reporting to [CEO] Tim [Cook]," Apple spokesman Steve Dowling told All Things D.

It's just the latest twist for Mansfield, who?has one of the most intriguing stories at Apple in the last year.?

Mansfield was appointed Senior Vice President of Technologies, a new group working on wireless technologies, last fall. Prior to that, he was SVP of hardware engineering, where he oversaw development of the iPhone and iPad.?

In June of 2012, Apple put out a press release say Mansfield was retiring. Two months later, he un-retired, deciding to stay at Apple for two more years.?

When Mansfield's retirement was announced, CEO Tim Cook reportedly almost faced an insurrection. The people working in the hardware engineering division did not believe Mansfield's replacement, Dan Ricci, was ready to take over.?

CEO Tim Cook talked Mansfield into staying by offering him a big pay package, a new role, and by firing someone Mansfield didn't like.?

Mansfield's total compensation last year made him the second highest-compensated executive on the S&P 500.??He got $85.5 million, almost all of it in stock,?according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

In addition to the money, Cook may have put Mansfield in charge of the most exciting new project at Apple since the iPhone.?

Mansfield is reportedly?overseeing development of the iWatch, Apple's next major product.?

Mansfield may have been less enthusiastic about developing the iWatch if Cook hadn't fired Scott Forstall?last October.

Forstall was the executive who led the iPhone and iPad software group. He was a polarizing figure inside Apple. While he did a lot of incredible work for the company, he was also despised by other executives for being a bit of a jerk.

Mansfield reportedly couldn't stand to be in the same room as Forstall.?

Our speculation is that development of the iWatch would have been the kind of job that required close collaboration between Forstall and Mansfield. After all, Mansfield led the development of mobile hardware and Forstall led development of mobile software.

If Mansfield couldn't stand being in the same room as Forstall, there was no way he was going to work closely with Forstall to develop the iWatch.?

We're guessing Cook's decision to let Forstall go made Mansfield more enthusiastic about staying to create Apple's next blockbuster product.?

So why did Mansfield's bio disappear from Apple's executive page??He probably spent the last year as an executive leading the transition of the hardware engineering group. He's probably done with that, and focusing only on the iWatch.?

Plus, Apple is Apple, and it likes mystery and secrets.

If Mansfield is overseeing the iWatch, and iWatch proves to be the next major product for Apple, ?the retention of Mansfield may ultimately prove to be the best thing Cook does in his first year as full-time CEO of Apple.?

Apple's success comes from creating industry-defining new product categories and owning them for years. It's been almost four years since the iPad. If the company is going to get its mojo back, it needs a breakout product. Perhaps Mansfield's iWatch will be that product.

CAIRO -- Supporters of Egypt's ousted Islamist president marched toward a military facility in defiance of an army warning in the early hours of Monday, risking a new confrontation after dozens were shot dead at the weekend.

The Muslim Brotherhood said the destination was the military intelligence headquarters, despite an army statement warning protesters to steer clear of military installations.

A Reuters reporter saw several thousand marchers leaving the Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque in northern Cairo, where they have been staging a weeks-long vigil to demand the reinstatement of deposed Mohammed Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president.

At least 72 Brotherhood supporters were shot dead by security forces on Saturday near the vigil, deepening the turmoil convulsing the country since the army shunted Morsi from power on July 3.

/

Deadly protests continue weeks after the nation's military removed the president from office.

The killings at dawn - following a day of rival mass rallies - fueled global anxiety that the Arab world's most populous nation could descend into a broader conflagration.

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, was due to meet on Monday in Cairo with the army's General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who led the overthrow of Morsi, and officials of the Freedom and Justice Party, the Brotherhood's political wing.

The marchers carried pictures of the deposed president, flashing victory signs and chanting, "Our blood and souls we sacrifice for Morsi."

The military intelligence building is several miles from the site of the vigil, where thousands of protesters are defying threats by Egypt's army-installed authorities to clear them.

The army, saying it was aware of the planned march, issued a statement urging protesters "not to come close to military facilities in general, and the headquarters of military intelligence specifically."

Sisi, who was appointed by Morsi only to turn against him after a year into the president's rule, made his first appearance on Sunday since the killings, smiling before television cameras at a graduation ceremony for police recruits dressed in starched white uniforms.

He received a standing ovation and was hailed by Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim as "Egypt's devoted son."

Fawning coverage in state and private media reflected Sisi's rising political star, in a country ruled by former military officers for six decades before a 2011 popular uprising toppled veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Ashton, in a statement, said that during her visit she would press for a "fully inclusive transition process, taking in all political groups, including the Muslim Brotherhood."

The military says it does not want to retain power and aims to hand over to full civilian rule with a "road map" to parliamentary elections in about six months.

But the very public role of Sisi as face of the new order has sown doubt in the army's intentions, and the Brotherhood says it wants nothing to do with his road map.

Morsi has been in army detention since he was ousted, and the military-backed interim government has placed him under investigation on charges that include murder.

Speaking to Reuters on Sunday, interim Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy said deepening divisions would lead to "more tragedies." He blamed the Brotherhood for the violence, but said they should be part of the country's political future.

"If they decide to withdraw from politics, it will be disappointing. If they decide to pursue violence, then you are looking at a completely different confrontation," Fahmy said.

"Even if I personally reject their positions or ideology, they have to find their place in Egypt's political life."

Ecuador striker Christian Benitez dies in Qatar, according to the Al Jaish football club

DOHA, Qatar - Ecuador striker Christian Benitez died Monday, a day after playing in a match for Qatari club El Jaish, the team said.

The club said the 27-year-old Benitez, who moved from Mexican club America to play in Qatar this year, died Monday but provided no further details.

"The club would like to offer its sincere condolences to the family of the player," the club said in a statement. "His sudden departure is a big shock for each member of the technical and administrative staff. He was a player that over the short period he was here was regarded for his high moral character."

El Jaish played Qatar Sports on Sunday in the Sheik Jassim Cup, a warm-up tournament for the upcoming football season. Benitez, who also spent a season in England with Birmingham, was in the lineup.

The match was played in hot and humid conditions, which are typical of the Persian Gulf at this time of year.

"The player participated for the first time with the team during yesterday's match against Qatar Sports Club in the Sheik Jassim Cup without complaining of any health problems," the club said.

Qatar will host the 2022 World Cup and the searing temperatures have prompted many former football stars as well as FIFA President Sepp Blatter to call for the competition to be moved to the cooler, winter months. Blatter plans to ask FIFA's executive committee later this year to move it.

NBA Denver Nuggets ? Select A Good Web Design Company That ...

Through the years, ?good? web design companies have provided customers with the service and design every business seek. Using business and individual based questions, these web companies are able to capture the essence that makes your company unique. As most business owners know, reputation means everything. When your website is created, your web design company should provide professional web design services, and cross-platform and browser compatible technology. This will ensure your website will be held to the highest standards, making your site as profitable as possible.

To the average start-up company, the building of a professional website can seem like a hassle. That?s why you should select a web company that provides you with personal one-on-one customer service, and provide an array of features, services, and ideas for your business. Make sure the web company you select can ask questions and communicate with you, without all the ?tech-speak?. This will leave a comfortable space for you to discuss what you envision for your website.

Five Things To Keep In Mind When Selecting A Professional Web Design Company

1. No Hassles, No Worries ? Select a company that will keep you informed of every expense, suggestion, idea or service they provide BEFORE they physically do it. There are web companies out there who will do all sorts of things you did not ask for, then send you an unexpected large bill.

2. Experience ? It?s always best to choose a company that knows what they are doing, when it comes to?professional web design services. Usually it always seems to come down to budget vs. quality and cost. However, paying for a poorly designed site is probably not going to make you your money back. At the end of the day, websites are an investment. Start with a smaller site and better company vs. a larger site and a poor designer.

3. SEO ? Many designers can build a website, but can they help you to promote it online? Ask the web company to provide you with proof of past search engine optimization services that they have performed for other clients.

4. 21st Century Look, Feel, and Functionality ? Choose a company that will create your site using professional web designers and that is on the cutting edge of the technology. This will ensure your new website will keep your business seem relevant on the internet.

5. Reliable ? ?Here today? gone tomorrow?. This is one area I have just never quite figured out. Why in the world would a web designer take the initiative to gain a customer, then not give them good customer service? Probably the best advice I can give you, is to find a company that is reliable. It can get quite messy if you get involved with a web design company that disappears or takes weeks to get back with you.

New Mobile Web Design Technology

Professional web design companies should currently be gearing towards creating web designs that are compatible on mobile phones and devices. And, now it is time to get ?mobile? website in the works, if you have not done so already. Technology has unveiled the ability for your website to function on mobile phones and devices even better, by creating a ?mobile? version of your site geared towards mobile users.

The popularity of ?mobile websites? is skyrocketing, as shown with national chains accepting mobile coupons through their sites and apps letting consumers compare multiple stores prices for the best deal. Imagine if there was a customer looking for your service right down the road and they pass your store because they couldn?t find you on their device! Almost all businesses should recognizes their need for a ?mobile? website, and look into companies that have or are expanding their professional web design services for the future of your mobile online business.

'Under the Dome' renewed for a second season

"Under the Dome," CBS' massive sci-fi summer hit, was renewed for a second season, the network announced Monday.

Stephen King, who wrote the novel upon which the serialized drama was based, will pen the first of 13 new episodes, premiering in summer 2014.

Starring Mike Vogel and Rachelle Lefevre and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, the series centers around a small town suddenly trapped beneath a mysterious transparent dome. And within the supernatural bubble, the residents of Chester's Mill, Maine, are also hiding dark secrets of their own.

?We?re excited to tell more stories about the mystery of the dome and the secrets in Chester's Mill, and are thrilled to have the master storyteller himself, Stephen King, tell the first one of next season,? said CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler in a statement.

When asked about sustaining the mystery without frustrating viewers, CBS boss Les Moonves compared "Dome" to the network's other event series, "Hostages."

"We didn't put it on to just have 15 episodes ? we put it on to have multiple seasons of it. Why can't they be under the dome a long period of time? This is television," he joked with reporters at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour Monday. "This is science fiction.

" 'Under the Dome' in a lot of ways is a soap opera: It's 'Dallas' in the future," added Moonves, referring not to remake, but the original "Who shot J.R.?" 1980s phenomenon.

"Dome's" renewal is one of the least surprising network pickups of the year, considering its astronomical ratings. Its Monday night broadcast has averaged more than 13 million viewers and given the network its first win in the 18-49 demo in 20 years. It also has attracted an impressive online audience and is Amazon's No. 1 streaming series.

Invest Offshore in UCIT Funds - Invest Offshore

What are UCITS Funds?

A growing number of investors are including hedge funds and other alternative strategies within their portfolios as a way of providing better portfolio diversification during adverse market conditions, as well as potentially boosting risk-adjusted returns over the long term.

However, the recent financial crisis and a number of high profile fraud cases have highlighted challenges associated with the traditional hedge fund structure, particularly the lack of liquidity, transparency and effective regulation. For retail investors, higher barriers to entry due to minimum investment size can also make gaining exposure to hedge funds difficult.

As a result, investors are increasingly turning to regulated open-ended funds, such as those covered by the European Union?s UCITS regulations, as a way to gain easier, more liquid, and more transparent exposure to alternative investment strategies.

UCIT Funds are not marketed to US Investors who Invest Offshore, nor are SIF: Specialized Investment Funds (3 Trillion invested worldwide), or AIFMD funds (16 Trillion is currently invested in AIFMD funds globally). None of these 3 investment classes are available to USA person?s, when Investing Offshore BUT they are ALL available when Investing FROM an Offshore Investment Account.

Fit And Well Idaho: Breast Cancer Awareness

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) If you put eight women in a room, one will be diagnosed with breast cancer. If that isn't alarming, breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women.
But, with early detection, mortality rates have been decreasing over the past two decades.

Of all the imaging centers in Idaho, only four carry the distinction of Breast Imaging Center of Excellence and one of those is in Twin Falls.

According to Marla Van Tassel, a breast biopsy coordinator for St. Luke's, "that means we provide mammogram services, ultrasound biopsy services along with stereo biopsy guided services."

For some women, a mammogram can be a frightening and invasive procedure.

But St. Luke's Magic Valley Women's Imaging Center is hoping to ease those fears.

"I think we have a great, inviting environment where women can feel comfortable when they come in to get their mammograms. We have experienced techs that do a great job."

Most mammograms are quick, lasting between five and ten minutes.

Marla Van Tassell also goes out into the community to promote the importance of mammograms.

"We invite people to invite us to their community groups so we can promote mammograms and let them know how important mammograms are...it's important to understand early detection is the key. If we can catch it early, then we have a greater chance of catching it."

Being overweight, frequent alcohol consumption, even combined hormone replacement therapy are all risk factors.

With breast cancer being the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, there's never been a better time to take care of your health.

Local awareness programs include the 900 Women campaign, Women's Health Check and the Diane Bolt Fund.

Tough Enough to Wear Pink will return to the Twin Falls County Fair on August 29th.

The annual parade runs down 4th Avenue and will play host to the likes of dastardly Seafair Pirates, giant helium balloons and dozens of colurful community floats, with former Seattle SuperSonics player Gary Payton as the Grand Marshal. Seth and Kim Rosen wanted to make sure they got a good spot to view the Seafair Torchlight Parade, so they headed to downtown Fourth Avenue early.

The parade starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. They got there at noon.

?We got the very last curbside spot,? Kim Rosen said as she and her family sat at their makeshift camp near Fourth Avenue and Cedar Street.

The Torchlight Parade is expected to draw 300,000 viewers to watch the on Fourth Avenue between Seattle Center and Pioneer Square.

With a couple of hours to go before the parade started, viewing areas were at a premium. Groups walked up and down Fourth Avenue trying to find a space to set down lawn chairs and blankets. Near Fourth Avenue and Battery Street, someone had chained together five chairs around a tree.

The parade is a Seattle tradition that?s gone on for 64 years. The Rosens have come at least a half-dozen times in the past 30 years, they said, first with their daughter, Jessica Markham, and now their 3-year-old granddaughter Ashlyn. The Duvall couple wanted to make sure their granddaughter had a good spot to watch the parade.

Before the procession started, the couple passed the time watching ?the parade outside the parade.?

?The people-watching is not too bad,? Seth Rosen said.

Viewers had other things to watch before the parade, too. At 6:30, racers in the Torchlight Run, some in pirate costumes, would be running along the same route.

Women with bitter past run for Chile's presidency

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) ? Their history is the history of Chile. Michelle Bachelet and Evelyn Matthei, childhood friends whose fathers became top generals, were thrust onto opposite sides of the country's deep political divide.

Bachelet's father served socialist President Salvador Allende before and after the 1973 coup ended one of Latin America's oldest democracies. Matthei's father ran the military school where Gen. Alberto Bachelet was tortured to death for refusing to line up behind the dictator, Gen. Augusto Pinochet.

They have remained cordial ever since, through long political careers on the left and the right. But their good graces will be tested like never before now that they're facing off in the Nov. 17 general election, the first presidential race between two women in Chile's history.

"There's an inevitable return to the past," said Esteban Valenzuela, a political analyst at Universidad Alberto Hurtado in Santiago. "It's an historic dispute between the daughter of a victim of the dictatorship and an active member of the military junta."

Only months ago, neither woman seemed to want this.

Bachelet, who served as Chile's first female president from 2006-2010, was happily running the UN's agency for women in New York until she finally resigned in March, when it had become painfully obvious that the center-left coalition couldn't settle on anyone else popular enough to win back the presidency.

Matthei was running President Sebastian Pinera's labor and security ministry and had her sights on retirement until the center-right alliance threatened to unravel last week. Its presidential candidate shocked the country by quitting, citing depression, only weeks after winning the primary. Pinera backed Matthei as the right's best remaining hope for stopping Bachelet's return.

Polls have suggested that Bachelet, a 61-year-old former pediatrician and socialist with a maternal touch, is unstoppable. Support for Matthei, 59, has yet to be measured.

An economist, Matthei is proud of having taken tough stands as she rose through the Independent Democratic Union, the hard-right party that sustained Pinochet's 17-year dictatorship and sought to protect his legacy for years thereafter. She describes herself as "chucara," Chilean slang for a horse that can't be tamed.

"I'm not the daughter of a military man, I'm Evelyn Matthei," she declared as she launched her campaign. "No one sees me as the daughter of the retired general Fernando Matthei. I've never been treated or behaved like 'the daughter of.'"

Both women inherited their fathers' sense of duty and commitment, ignoring gender barriers as they rose through Chile's male-dominated politics.

"I've always said that if women can give birth they can tolerate anything. So we're going to be governing with strength," Bachelet said during her first year as president.

Matthei, for her part, said being female should help in her race against Bachelet. "I don't think men really realize how they discriminate women in their daily lives," she told CNN Chile recently. "These are ingrained cultural issues, backward-looking and not often spoken."

Bachelet and Matthei were close in the 1960s: Their fathers, both fighter pilots, were attached to the same military base and the girls were playmates at the same elementary school.

By 1972, as other high-ranking military officers were conspiring to end his socialist presidency, Allende put Gen. Bachelet in charge of overseeing food sales nationwide. Many products were in short supply as Allende's right-wing opponents, financed by U.S. President Richard Nixon, held back goods and instigated strikes to create a sense of chaos.

Then came Sept. 11, 1973. Bachelet, a medical student, climbed to the roof of her university to watch fighter jets bomb the presidential palace. Her father remained loyal to Allende, even after the democratically-elected president committed suicide rather than surrender. Gen. Bachelet was soon arrested.

Gen. Fernando Matthei, stationed in Britain, returned home shortly after the coup, becoming Pinochet's health minister and then a member of the ruling junta.

Gen. Bachelet, meanwhile, died in prison after being tortured by officers at the military school run by Matthei.

Pinochet's takeover forced every Chilean to take sides, and the generals' daughters were no exception, devoting their lives to public service from opposite sides of the political spectrum.

Early on, Matthei remained in London and helped the military government's British embassy with translations while studying to become a concert pianist. Bachelet joined the resistance, and helped hide dissidents until she too was arrested, in 1975.

Bachelet was interrogated, tortured, jailed and then exiled ? an ordeal she prefers not to discuss. The former president's autobiography says she suffered "physical hardships" before using political connections to reach Australia and East Germany.

Both women eventually returned to Chile, and with the country's return to democracy in 1990, have sought to avoid using their shared past against each other during long and successful political careers.

But the truce was threatened recently, when Matthei's father was called into court to answer accusations of responsibility for Gen. Bachelet's torture, which happened shortly after the military school came under his command, but before he had physically moved in.

Matthei called the accusations "disgusting" and suggested that Bachelet's forces were somehow behind the judicial maneuver. Bachelet responded that her family had nothing to do with it.

The tortured general's widow, Angela Jeria, went even farther last year, saying that "Gen. Matthei has always been our friend ... I care for him a lot and I'm certain that he wasn't at the Air Force War Academy when my husband was there."

Both candidates say they're strongly committed to defending human rights, and want to run on current issues in response to mass protests that have called for profound changes in society.

Bachelet vows to use a second term to fight Chile's income inequality. Matthei angered elements of her own party by advocating for abortions when a mother's health is in danger; Bachelet would go farther, legalizing it in cases of rape as well.

Both would reform taxes and change the Pinochet-era's constitution to break the lock on elective offices long enjoyed by their two dominant coalitions. And both want education reform, although Bachelet agrees with the protesters' demands for universal free education, and Matthei says she is "totally opposed."

"'Today's triumph is not the victory of one person, but of millions of Chileans," Bachelet said after winning the center-left's primary. "It's a project where the voices of citizens are vital. It's the triumph of the demand for education that is free, dignified and of quality for every child."

Bachelet's spokesman Alvaro Elizalde repeated his boss's call for a clean campaign, but both sides are already in attack mode.

"While Michelle Bachelet was running around Fifth Avenue in New York, Evelyn Matthei was running around the regions and communities of this country, seeking the citizens' support, with the conviction that she has all the elements necessary to win," UDI president Patricio Melero said.

Bachelet's allies lashed back: Matthei's "Achilles' heel" is her past as the daughter of a junta member, now competing against one of its leading victims, countered Domingo Namuncura, a political analyst whose PPD party is in the center-left coalition.

Fastjet's tickets for South Africa route to go on sale at end of month

Low-cost African airline ?s () tickets for its route between Tanzania and South Africa go on sale this week.

The route is ?s first international one and marks the airline?s initial step on the way to becoming a pan-African carrier.

said tickets will be on sale from July 31 and basic fares, excluding government taxes and charges, for flights between Dar es Salaam and Johannesburg will cost as little as US$100.

Richard Bodin, chief commercial officer of , said: ?For some time the Dar es Salaam to Johannesburg route has only been operated by one airline and the lack of competition has created inflated fares. will substantially reduce the average fare and in doing so will encourage more leisure and business traffic between Tanzania and South Africa.?

Initially, flights on the route will operate three times a week, with the first flight scheduled for 27 September. The airline is expecting strong demand on this route and will increase the frequency of flights in line with market demand. The airline expects to add further international destinations including Lusaka, Zambia, to its flying programme in the near future.

Ed Winter, chief executive officer of , said the availability of tickets for flights between Tanzania and South Africa marked a milestone in the company?s history.

?Despite a number of challenges, is now able to respond to huge consumer demand and provide an alternative and affordable link between Dar es Salaam and Johannesburg, having secured all required permissions to do so. For far too long it has been difficult and prohibitively expensive to fly between these two extraordinary cities. We expect our lower fares to stimulate a huge increase in the numbers of passengers travelling on this route, as has been the case on our domestic routes in Tanzania,? Winter said.

?Overwhelming public support for ?s low cost model has been a contributing factor to us launching this route. We hope that the obvious desire for a change in the competitive landscape will result in soon being awarded licences in more African countries, bringing consumers the benefits of choice and lower prices on many more international routes.?

The Energy Industry?s Crocodile Tears

Governments subsidize energy. That is a way of life in the United States that is not going to change, because powerful interests make sure those subsidizes become naturalized and we don?t think of them as welfare. That?s probably a good thing. It?s in the government?s interest to make sure its citizens have access to affordable energy. The question is which types of energy should we subsidize. Now that the tiny subsidies for solar are just barely beginning to cut into the profit margins of the long subsidized home energy industry that relies upon hydroelectric, gas, and oil, they are crying huge crocodile tears after their future profit margins.

Alarmed by what they say has become an existential threat to their business, utility companies are moving to roll back government incentives aimed at promoting solar energy and other renewable sources of power. At stake, the companies say, is nothing less than the future of the American electricity industry.

According to the Energy Information Administration, rooftop solar electricity ? the economics of which often depend on government incentives and mandates ? accounts for less than a quarter of 1 percent of the nation?s power generation.

And yet, to hear executives tell it, such power sources could ultimately threaten traditional utilities? ability to maintain the nation?s grid.

?We did not get in front of this disruption,? Clark Gellings, a fellow at the Electric Power Research Institute, a nonprofit arm of the industry, said during a panel discussion at the annual utility convention last month. ?It may be too late.?

I am sympathetic to the idea that one form of energy shouldn?t necessarily have to pay for the upkeep of a system that other energy users aren?t paying for. That?s an easy fix?a slight tax on credit for system maintenance. Otherwise, I see no reason at all why the government should take an interest in the profit margins of energy corporations. Again, the government needs to ensure affordable energy. But it also needs to ensure clean and sustainable energy. Home solar is a great way to do that. Like any energy system, it?s almost impossible for an everyday homeowner to install on their own. Government subsidies are necessary. The government already massively subsidizes one type of home energy system. There?s no reason at all that it should pull back from doing so with solar.

Moreover, both of these are good things:

?If the costs to maintain the grid are not being borne by some customers, then other customers have to bear a bigger and bigger portion,? said Steve Malnight, a vice president at Pacific Gas and Electric. ?As those costs get shifted, that leads to higher and higher rates for customers who don?t take advantage of solar.?

Utility executives call this a ?death spiral.? As utilities put a heavier burden on fewer customers, it increases the appeal for them to turn their roofs over to solar panels.

A handful of utilities have taken a different approach and are instead getting into the business of developing rooftop systems themselves. Dominion, for example, is running a pilot program in Virginia in which it leases roof space from commercial customers and installs its own panels to study the benefits of a decentralized generation.

Last month, Clean Power Finance, a San Francisco-based start-up that provides financial services and software to the rooftop solar industry, announced that it had backing from Duke Energy and other utilities, including Edison International. And in May, NextEra Energy Resources bought Smart Energy Capital, a commercial solar developer.

The government should be subsidizing solar and if there?s more reason to move to clean, renewable energy, then yay! Second, like with wind energy, I think it?s crazy that established energy companies don?t get involved and monopolize that as well. The opposition of oil to wind and home energy to solar makes no sense. If you want to stay ahead of the curve and continue to profit, adjust and dominate the new energy. You have the capital to do it. So I?m glad to see a few big energy companies do this. But most will resist because solar is hippie energy and hippies suck.
