Global provider of payment and risk services WorldPay has signed an agreement with Microsoft, which will use its alternative payments programme to allow consumers in China to purchase applications and games from Windows Phone Store and Office subscriptions from O365.
Alternative Payment Methods (APMs) are crucial for businesses to attract customers in all geographies, particularly in markets such as China, where more than a third of internet users are regular online shoppers and have specific local payment preferences. Currently, APMs account for USD 212 billion (or 22 percent) of global e-commerce transactions. It is estimated that there are currently over 230 APMs operating globally including bank transfer, offline credit transfer, direct debits, e-wallets, cheques and mobile payments.
According to WorldPay?s Optimising your Alternative Payments report, in China, Alipay has a 60 percent market share in e-commerce transactions.
WorldPay has more than 200 national and international payment methods and operates in over 40 countries worldwide. There are 30 additional alternative payment methods in development and scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2013.
