Softbank 3Q profit doubles on iPhone sales

(AP) ? Japanese phone company Softbank, owned by billionaire Masayoshi Son, says its net profit more than doubled in the October-December quarter from a year earlier, helped by strong sales of Apple's iPhone and iPads.

Net profit rose to 65.9 billion yen ($724 million) in the last quarter of 2012 compared with 32.83 billion yen a year earlier.

Sales rose 7 percent to 932.7 billion yen ($10.2 billion).

Softbank is seeking approval from U.S. authorities for its $20 billion purchase of a 70 percent stake in Sprint Nextel Corp. that would be Japan's biggest foreign acquisition ever. It expects to complete the sale by mid-year, it said.

Softbank, which also offers fixed-line broadband services, has carried out an aggressive marketing drive in recent years, starring a talking white dog that has proved popular among Japanese.

The company credited strong sales of the iPhone5, iPad and "mimamori" phones with security buzzers in them for its stronger earnings in the previous quarter, as its market share rose to 24.3 percent with the addition of 2.37 million new subscribers in April-December. The company had 31.3 million subscribers as of the end of 2012.

yes, your resume and cover letter really are the problem ? Ask a ...

I don?t usually print thank-you letters (but I do save them in a file in my email because they are great to look at on a bad day ? and you should do the same!), but I?m sharing this one because it?s further evidence that You Should Take Me Seriously When I Say You Need to Fix Your Resume and Cover Letter.

A reader writes:

I want to thank you for the recent write-up you did regarding updating cover letters and resumes if you were having trouble hearing back from potential employers. I had my husband read it (I made some posts in the comments section about how his old company said they would rehire him after he completed his degree but didn?t, and now he was having trouble finding a new job, etc.) and he immediately updated his resume and cover letter. He submitted it to a company three weeks ago on a Friday, was contacted for an interview the next day for the following Monday, and was offered a job two days later!

Thank you again for all of the awesome effort you put into your website. I recommend it to everyone because you?re one of the few down-to-earth, honest writers who are actually helping people by providing useful, logical information. Plus you have the funniest stories about people?s workplaces.

That is awesome. Congratulations to your husband, and thank you for taking the time to write this!

Android-powered Vertu Constellation Ti leaked all over, just needs a diamond-studded price tag (updated)

Androidpowered Vertu Ti RM828V

Shortly after the latest rumor that Vertu's prepping its first-ever Android-based device, eagle-eyed Blog of Mobile delivered further evidence to support the claim, and it even managed to dig out what it claims to be product shots of said phone. First of all, the name "Ti" and model number "RM-828V" are spotted across Bluetooth SIG, GLBenchmark and telecom regulator databases in Singapore and Macau. Having scanned through these pages we now know that the Ti will come with Android 4.0.4, an 800 x 480 display, a 1.5GHz processor, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. Blog of Mobile added that it's a Snapdragon MSM8260A SoC with WCDMA 850/900/1700/1900/2100 radio, accompanied by a rather lame 1,250mAh battery. Bluetooth SIG's page provided the following design description of the device:

"VERTU Ti possesses the classic Vertu design DNA and characteristics - strong, unique & distinctive. The design and craftsmanship positions VERTU Ti alongside other iconic products in the luxury market."

If the above images are authentic then the Ti does indeed maintain the classic Vertu look. The only real changes we can see so far are the three new physical keys -- presumably "Back," "Home" and "Recent apps" for Android. If all goes well, we should see this wallet-busting gadget at MWC next month, so start saving up now.

Update: Russian retailer spblux.ru lists four variants of the Ti or, as the site calls it, the Constellation Ti: "Titanium Black PVD black leather," "Titanium Black Alligator," "Red Gold Mixed Metal" and "Titanium Black Leather." Interestingly, the red gold version has a search button instead of "Recent apps," but we guess that was an earlier design. Regardless, we have all four designs after the break for your viewing pleasure. [Thanks, Roman K.]

Nexus 4 trots out in white, sets unicorn fans aflutter

We're pretty fond of unicorns white phones here at Engadget, especially rare ones like the white Nokia N9. So you can imagine our excitement when we came across this photo of a white Nexus 4 over at Phone Arena. While rumors of a white Nexus 4 have been swirling around the intertubes for some time, a picture speaks a thousand words, right? We took a long, eagle-eyed look at this image and didn't see any signs of trickery. Obviously this doesn't mean a white Nexus 4 is on the way -- it could just be a dummy handset and / or a one-off prototype. Still, if last year's white Galaxy Nexus is any indication, there's a chance this is the real deal. We've reached out to Google and LG for comment, so stay tuned -- it sure would be lovely to add this beast to our stable.

CAPITOL FACTS: GOP wants gay marriage bill OK

Talk to just about any top Illinois Republican these days off the record, and they'll freely admit that they want the state bill legalizing gay marriage passed as soon as possible.

It's not that they're necessarily in favor of gay marriage, mind you. Many of them are publicly and privately opposed. Some of them do support it, even though they don't feel they can vote for it because it might destroy their careers in the next GOP primary.

The reason so many Republicans would like to see the bill passed is because they know that with the huge, new Democratic majorities in both state legislative chambers that it's eventually going to pass anyway and they want to get this issue out of the way and behind them as soon as possible.

The issue is trending hard against the GOP's historical opposition, and they want the thing off the table before it starts to hurt them.

Back in 2005, a statewide poll taken for the Illinois Policy Survey by Northern Illinois University found that 31 percent of Illinoisans supported gay marriage, while another 34 percent backed civil unions and 29 percent were opposed to any legal recognition

Five years later, in 2010, a poll by Southern Illinois University's Paul Simon Public Policy Institute found little change in the public's attitudes. Just 34 percent supported gay marriage, another 34 percent backed civil unions and 27 percent said they wanted no legal recognition.

But then, things began changing fast. By 2012, the Paul Simon Institute's annual poll had support for gay marriage at 44 percent ? a jump of 10 big points. Opposition to all legal recognition was down to just 20 percent, while backing for the civil unions status quo was at 32 percent.

A Public Policy Polling survey taken last month had support for gay marriage at 47 percent, with opposition at 42 percent. Worse yet for the Republicans, 58 percent of people younger than the age of 45 backed gay marriage, while 37 percent were against. And 54 percent of women backed the idea, compared to 37 percent who were opposed.

Republicans, and Democrats for that matter, expect this trend to continue. By 2014, people figure that a solid majority of Illinoisans will support gay marriage. So the Republicans don't want to be on the wrong side of yet another hot-button issue come the next statewide election.

Republicans also want the issue cleared away because they don't want it coming up in their primary races. Except for things like the state income tax hike, which was designed to be "temporary," what's done is usually considered done in politics.

The issue is causing some serious short-term divisiveness within the Republican Party ranks. Social conservatives like freshman state Sen. Jim Oberweis and former Congressman Joe Walsh have called for Illinois Republican Party Chairman Pat Brady's head for publicly lobbying on behalf of the gay marriage bill.

The quicker this thing gets resolved, goes the reasoning, the quicker the white-hot war will end and the quicker the party can move along to other, less divisive issues like taxes.

The Republicans want to make repealing the state's income tax hike a centerpiece of the 2014 election. The tax hike is set to expire in January of 2015, less than two months after the next election. But if the GOP gets too bogged down in too many social issues where they are on the "wrong" side of public opinion, they won't stand much of a chance.

Anyway, that's why Chairman Brady was sent out to walk the plank on the gay marriage issue earlier this month. Yes, he actually does personally support gay marriage, but he almost undoubtedly wouldn't have gone so public with his support if party leaders were not encouraging him behind the scenes.

And the party's top dogs, including U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk and the two state GOP legislative leaders, want this thing taken care of so they can move beyond it, even though they may not actually vote for the bill when it gets to the floor. Senate GOP Leader Christine Radogno will be a "No" vote, for example, but she didn't try to stop Brady when he checked in with her.

Disney Puts the Brakes on the Star Wars 3D Reissues

Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace 3D (Review)

Unfortunate news to some; a completely understandable and relieving announcement to others. With Star Wars: Episode VII now boasting a director in the form of J.J. Abrams, and Lucasfilm?s new corporate leadership focusing on rejuvenating and expanding the Star Wars brand, the decision has been made to leave the past in the past, and look to the future.

With a bright horizon for the galaxy far, far, away, it?s being reported today that the 3D theatrical re-releases of Episode II ? Attack of the Clones and Episode III ? Revenge of the Sith have been cancelled.

The report comes courtesy of Deadline, and is less than surprising, given the reaction and box office take for the 3D re-release of Episode I ? The Phantom Menace. Despite failing to make the problems of the first prequel any easier to look past (read our review if in doubt), the 3D release only brought in $103 million. More than enough to cover the post-conversion with a healthy profit, but clearly the risk of saturating the market isn?t worth it for the series? new trustees.

The promotional partners cited as the source of this update explain that the decision was made to shift focus and attention towards the next three Star Wars films (currently being written). While it?s still too early to tell how successful Episode VII will turn out, this move should be seen as a good sign going forward.

There was money to be made by post-converting the previous films ? and charging higher ticket prices for the 3D experience ? but perhaps Disney learned lessons that the previous incarnation of Lucasfilm refused to. Namely: if you?re trying to convince people that the best is yet to come, it?s not wise to regularly remind them of what happened the last time that was promised.

Star Wars 3D re-release

Disney?s desire to wipe the slate clean, and build numbered sequels and spin-off films has already been seen with Marvel, so it stands to reason they?re not banking on much nostalgia for the Star Wars series post-1990s. That being said, there?s still some hope (pun) for seeing the original films re-released in 3D at some point. Even modest projections would put a 3D release of Episode IV ? A New Hope above The Phantom Menace?s $23 million domestic opening, and love of the series? first trilogy has yet to wain.

Of course, that all depends on whether Lucasfilm maintains the reported intention of releasing 2-3 films a year. With spin-off adventures already being pitched, a live-action TV series back in the discussion, and Episode VII a certified production, the calendar would fill up mighty quick. There?s no reason Disney couldn?t find room in their Marvel/Lucasfilm schedule (December releases, for instance), but if push comes to shove, the old will likely make way for the new.

For now we?ll stifle our faintest of desires to see Episode II and III on the big screen again (and wish that the 3D re-releases had begun with the original trilogy even more), but what?s your take on the cancellations? A wise move, or were you looking forward to introducing friends or your own kids to the franchise in theaters?

Star Wars Episode 7?is due in theaters in 2015.

Phone and mailed interventions significantly increase colorectal cancer screening rates

PHILADELPHIA?A mailing or phone call to help patients get screened for colorectal cancer significantly increases their chances of actually getting tested, according to a study published in the January issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention by researchers at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson.

The research team, led by Ronald E. Myers, Ph.D., Professor and Director of Division of Population Science, Department of Medical Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University, performed a randomized, controlled trial of 945 people aged 50-79 to test the impact of a new, preference-based navigation intervention, as opposed to standard mailing or usual care, on screening rates.

A third of the patients received a "tailored" phone call to encourage them to perform their preferred screening test (colonoscopy vs. at-home blood stool test), plus a mailing of preferred information; another third were sent information on colonoscopy and a stool blood test kit; while the last third received no intervention.

Patients who received a phone call and/or mailing were almost three times as likely to undergo screening six months later compared to those who had no intervention. However, there was no significant difference between the phone and mailed interventions versus mailings only on screening rates.

While colorectal cancer screening rates are increasing in the United States, rates lag behind those for breast and cervical cancer screening. Screening and early detection of colon and rectal cancer holds tremendous promise for reducing the toll of colon and rectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in this country with more than 140,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Late diagnoses will account for many of the colorectal cancer related deaths.

This is Ronald E. Myers, Ph.D., Thomas Jefferson University, Director of Division of Population Science, Department of Medical Oncology. He and researchers at Jefferson's Kimmel Cancer Center found that patients were three times more likely to get screened for colorectal cancer with phone navigation and mailings.

The study, which was conducted between 2007 and 2011, included 10 primary care practices affiliated with the Christiana Care Health System in Delaware that used a comment medical record system.

The research team searched for patients who had no prior diagnosis of colorectal neoplasia or inflammatory bowel diseases, had visited one of the participating practices within the previous two years, and were not compliant with American Cancer Society colorectal cancer screening guidelines.

For the study, 312 patients received a tailored intervention, where they were informed about both colonoscopy and blood stool tests and then were sent information on colonoscopy or the actual blood test performed, based on their preference. Another group, consisting of 316 patients, was mailed information about both colonoscopy and stool blood test performed. The remaining 317 were sent no information or tests and did not receive any phone calls.

Overall screening adherence at six months was significantly higher in both invention groups compared to the control group, the researchers found. Thirty-eight percent of patients who received the tailored phone interventions and 33 percent of patients who received mailings completed screening tests. Only 12% of patients in the control group completed screening tests.

In terms of the intervention groups, the researchers found that preference-based navigation did not significantly boost overall adherence to a level that was significantly higher than that achieved by mail, but increased participant performance of their preferred screening test in comparison to the mailed intervention, especially colonoscopy use.

"The study showed that both strategies were superior to usual care, and that there is not a one-size fits all approach to screening," said Dr. Myers. "The next step is to determine if an intervention strategy that maximizes screening test access, incorporates patient preference, and engages providers can achieve higher screening rates compared to just mailings."

Erectile Dysfunction Raises Risk of Hospitalization for Heart Woes

The more severe a man's erectile dysfunction is, the greater his risk of being hospitalized for heart problems, a new Australian study finds.

Among men in the study who had no history of heart disease, those with moderate erectile dysfunction (ED) were 23 percent more likely to be hospitalized for a cardiovascular problem, such as a heart attack, during a two-year period compared to men who did not have ED. And those with severe ED were 35 percent more likely to be hospitalized for cardiovascular problems than those without ED.

Men who already had heart problems and severe erectile dysfunction at the study's start were 64 percent more likely to be hospitalized for another heart problem during the study period compared to men without ED.

The results held even after the researchers accounted for factors that might increase the risk of heart problems, such as age, smoking, alcohol consumption and obesity.

The findings agree with previous studies that have linked erectile dysfunction to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. [See For Men, Sex Life Gets Better with Improved Heart Health.] But the new study is one of the first to investigate whether or not the risk of heart problems increases with the severity of ED.

The findings suggest erectile dysfunction may be a marker that signals underlying heart disease, the researchers, from Australian National University, said. It has been hypothesized that atherosclerosis (plaque in the arteries that limits blood flow) might first manifest itself in smaller blood vessels, such as those in the penis, the researchers said.

When a man sees the doctor for erectile dysfunction, the visit might be an opportunity to evaluate him for other problems, said Dr. Andrew Kramer, a urologist at the University of Maryland Medical Center, who was not involved in the study.

"You can use ED to get men in the door. It might be the only thing that brings them in," Kramer said. Urologists should encourage men with moderate or severe ED to visit a primary care doctor or cardiologist for heart disease screening, he said.

The researchers examined information from more than 95,000 Australian men ages 45 and over who filled out a health questionnaire between 2006 and 2009, and linked this information to records of hospital admissions and deaths in 2010.

During the study period, there were 7,855 hospital admissions related to cardiovascular disease and 2,304 deaths, the researchers said.

Men with erectile dysfunction of any severity (mild, moderate or severe) were at increased risk for hospitalization for heart failure compared to men who did not have ED.

Those with severe ED were about twice as likely to die during the study period than men without ED, the researchers said.

The study only found an association, not a cause-effect link. The researchers also did not have information about any medications participants were taking (some medications have ED as a side effect.)

The study was published today (Jan. 29) in the journal PLOS Medicine.

Pass it on:? Men witherectile dysfunction may be at risk for hospitalization with heart problems.

In-brain monitoring shows memory network

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Working with patients with electrodes implanted in their brains, researchers at the University of California, Davis, and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) have shown for the first time that areas of the brain work together at the same time to recall memories. The unique approach promises new insights into how we remember details of time and place.

"Previous work has focused on one region of the brain at a time," said Arne Ekstrom, assistant professor at the UC Davis Center for Neuroscience. "Our results show that memory recall involves simultaneous activity across brain regions." Ekstrom is senior author of a paper describing the work published Jan. 27 in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

Ekstrom and UC Davis graduate student Andrew Watrous worked with patients being treated for a severe seizure condition by neurosurgeon Dr. Nitin Tandon and his UTHealth colleagues.

To pinpoint the origin of the seizures in these patients, Tandon and his team place electrodes on the patient's brain inside the skull. The electrodes remain in place for one to two weeks for monitoring.

Six such patients volunteered for Ekstrom and Watrous' study while the electrodes were in place. Using a laptop computer, the patients learned to navigate a route through a virtual streetscape, picking up passengers and taking them to specific places. Later, they were asked to recall the routes from memory.

Correct memory recall was associated with increased activity across multiple connected brain regions at the same time, Ekstrom said, rather than activity in one region followed by another.

However, the analysis did show that the medial temporal lobe is an important hub of the memory network, confirming earlier studies, he said.

Intriguingly, memories of time and of place were associated with different frequencies of brain activity across the network. For example, recalling, "What shop is next to the donut shop?" set off a different frequency of activity from recalling "Where was I at 11 a.m.?"

Using different frequencies could explain how the brain codes and recalls elements of past events such as time and location at the same time, Ekstrom said.

"Just as cell phones and wireless devices work at different radio frequencies for different information, the brain resonates at different frequencies for spatial and temporal information," he said.

The researchers hope to explore further how the brain codes information in future work.

The neuroscientists analyzed their results with graph theory, a new technique that is being used for studying networks, ranging from social media connections to airline schedules.

"Previously, we didn't have enough data from different brain regions to use graph theory. This combination of multiple readings during memory retrieval and graph theory is unique," Ekstrom said.

Placing electrodes inside the skull provides clearer resolution of electrical signals than external electrodes, making the data invaluable for the study of cognitive functions, Tandon said. "This work has yielded important insights into the normal mechanisms underpinning recall, and provides us with a framework for the study of memory dysfunction in the future."

Additional authors of the study are Chris Connor and Thomas Pieters at the UTHealth Medical School. The work was supported by the Sloan Foundation, the Hellman Foundation and the NIH.

Who are these guys at QB in Super Bowl?

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? No Tom Brady. No Aaron Rodgers. No Ben Roethlisberger. Not a Manning in sight.

Super Bowl has a pair of fresh faces at quarterback, bona fide nobodies as far as the NFL title game goes. One will leave New Orleans as football's newest star.

For Colin Kaepernick and Joe Flacco, this is new territory. And, of course, exactly where they want to be.

"To be AFC champs feels good," Flacco said Monday. "We move on now to this challenge."

Flacco, the only quarterback to win a playoff game in each of his first five NFL seasons, will lead the Baltimore Ravens into Sunday's matchup against the NFC-winning San Francisco 49ers and Kaepernick, a backup for most of his two seasons.

It's the first time in a decade that the big game doesn't feature one of the big five household names in the glamour position.

You can't get much fresher than quarterbacks who never have gotten this far before.

"At the start of the season, I was just hoping to get on the field some way, somehow," said Kaepernick, the backup for Alex Smith, who took the 49ers to the conference final last season.

He got that chance after Smith sustained a concussion on Nov. 11, and hasn't seen the bench since.

Win this one and he'll have a piece of history, joining a heady quarterback club that includes Hall of Famers Joe Montana and Steve Young, who guided the 49ers to five NFL titles ? a victory every time they played. No. 6 would tie the team with Roethlisberger's Pittsburgh Steelers ? a record for most Super Bowl wins.

A second-round draft pick in 2011 out of Nevada ? not exactly Alabama ? Kaepernick has the shortest pro resume of any Super Bowl quarterback. It's impressive, nonetheless. His legs (181 yards rushing against Green Bay, a record for the position) and his arm (105.9 passer rating in the postseason) are the main reasons San Francisco is in its first NFL title game in 18 years.

"Anybody that is out there on the football field, you want to see them produce and get results," left tackle Joe Staley said. "With Colin, his first couple of starts, you did not know what to expect because we had not seen him out there as a starting quarterback. He did amazing and he has all season, as well as the playoffs. I think it was one of those things where we saw him in practice and we just wanted to see how he was going to handle the situation in the games. He has done that."

Still, he's new to this environment and that hardly seems to faze Kaepernick.

"One thing I've always said about him from the start is he comes off as a guy that has a lot of confidence," said center Jonathan Goodwin, who won a Super Bowl snapping for Drew Brees and the Saints three years ago. "I'm not just saying that. You can feel it by the way he acts and talks."

Flacco has that air of certainty, too, but at least it's built on a more substantial foundation, including an 8-4 mark in the playoffs, with six road wins ? the most for any quarterback, Montana and Young included. That goes for Baltimore's John Unitas, too.

Nobody is comparing Flacco to them just yet, except for the self-belief he brings to the job.

"You naturally become more of the guy when you spend a number of years in the league," he said at the Ravens' first Super Bowl news conference Monday. "As a quarterback, it's my job to lead from Day 1."

As a five-year starter, that's exactly what Flacco did after Baltimore drafted him out of Delaware ? yep, not exactly Alabama.

As has become the custom in the NFL, Flacco represents the high draft pick who steps behind center early in his career and, usually, stays there. Both Mannings did it, as did Roethlisberger. Just this season, the top two picks in the draft, QBs Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, were anointed starters at the outset and played sensationally.

Now Flacco and Kaepernick try to join those big-name quarterbacks who own all those Super Bowl rings.

"We try to pass tests every day," Flacco said.

That's how you become a Super Bowl quarterback.

Earthquake Early Warning in California Shifts Closer

An early warning system for California earthquakes could soon get a much-needed dose of money, a state lawmaker announced today (Jan 28).

State Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima) introduced legislation to fund a California-wide earthquake early warning system during a press conference at Caltech. The technology for a warning system already exists, through a prototype called the California Integrated Seismic Network, but scientists need more money to take it public. Other earthquake-prone countries with public warning systems include Japan, Mexico, Taiwan and Turkey.

The estimated cost to create a public warning system is $80 million. This will cover adding new seismic monitoring equipment and upgrading the state's existing network, as well as public outreach and education, said Lucy Jones, senior adviser for risk reduction for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), one of the monitoring network partners. "If we were building it from scratch, it would cost $650 million," she said.

Padilla added, "If you think about the lives we can save, the injuries we can reduce, and the billions upon billions of damages associated with every large earthquake, the system would more than pay for itself."

It would take from one to three years to fully launch the new system, Jones said.

Hope for more funding

However, Padilla's bill has no funding source within the state's budget, which is only now recovering from years of billion-dollar deficits. He hopes to identify a funding source by August, he said. The project also needs federal funding, Padilla said. Private groups have stepped in to help: The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation kicked in $6 million in 2011 for the prototype.

"I'm moving on the state funding piece because I don't want to wait for the federal government. We ought to deploy it sooner rather than later," Padilla said.

There is a 99 percent chance of a magnitude-6.7 earthquake or larger in the next 30 years in California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's most recent forecast, released in 2008. But the state's been relatively quiet for the past two decades ? college students born and raised in the Golden State have never lived through a catastrophic earthquake. The last big shaker, the Northridge quake in 1994, killed 60 people and caused about $13 billion in damage. [The 10 Biggest Earthquakes in History]

"We should do this before the next big earthquake," said Caltech seismologist Egill Hauksson, one of the project leaders. "Then we will not miss the opportunity of saving lives," he told OurAmazingPlanet.

How earthquake early warning works

The warning system relies on the speed of light to outrun earthquake waves, which travel at the speed of sound, Hauksson explained. "It's like lightning and thunder. You see the lightning first, and hear the thunder later."

Here's how it works:

California is dotted with a dense network of sensitive seismic monitoring equipment called seismometers. When an earthquake starts, the nearest seismometers ? and there are almost 1,000 in California ? detect ground shaking and send electronic signals at the speed of light to computers that rapidly analyze the strength and location of the quake.

The early warning system relies on the time delay between two earthquake waves. The first wave to emerge from an earthquake, called the P-wave, is an acoustic, or sound wave. It may make a slap or a bump as it passes, but doesn't cause much shaking. The second wave out is an S-wave (sometimes called secondary waves), and they travel at half the speed of the P-wave ? about 1.8 miles (3 kilometers) per second. The slower S-wave is the destroyer, the source of heavy shaking during an earthquake.

A computer can figure out the earthquake's size and location from the P-wave, and send out a warning signal before the damaging S-wave arrives. [Video: Earthquake Early Warning System Demonstration]

The signal arrives a few seconds to a minute before shaking, depending on the distance between the earthquake epicenter and the user's location, said Doug Given, the USGS early earthquake warning project coordinator. The primary users will be emergency personnel, hospitals, nuclear reactors, trains, factories and schools, Jones said. However, the signal will be publicly available, as in Japan, where programmers have created custom signal apps for phones, Hauksson said.

The prototype in place today works best for smaller earthquakes, and needs to be improved so it has fewer false alarms and can perform better during major quakes, such as those expected on the San Andreas Fault, Hauksson said. A recently published study suggests that California could experience a statewide earthquake, with the fault ripping apart for hundreds of miles.

"This is a starting point," Hauksson said.

The early warning system is a partnership between Caltech, the USGS and the University of California, Berkeley.

Japan plans to broadcast 2014 World Cup in 4K

While NHK's Super Hi-Vision 8K TV is still some distance away from becoming an everyday presence in our living rooms, we may get the next best thing soon. Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications expects to broadcast the 2014 World Cup next July in 4K, using free capacity on its communications satellites rather than the usual delivery methods -- the bandwidth required is reportedly too much for conventional sources. The 4K airing is still coming two years earlier than originally planned, however, and should eventually spread to broadcast satellites and terrestrial networks. The fortunate ones who can tune in to the ultra-sharp futebol will need an exorbitantly-priced 4K TV set to watch, but it's safe to presume that they'll have some of the best viewing parties around.

Why the premium for Brent oil won't last

Some 1.1 million barrels per day of pipeline capacity will alleviate the glut of West Texas Intermediate and allow it to supply higher-priced markets.

By Robert Rapier,?Contributor / January 28, 2013

A marker welcomes commuters to Cushing, Okla. The region has been glutted with oil, but 1.1 million barrels per day of new pipeline capacity should clear out the excess oil and allow it to reach higher-priced markets, thus increasing the price for West Texas Intermediate crude.

Matt Strasen/The Oklahoman/AP/File

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) is the primary benchmark for crude oil prices in the US. Historically, WTI has been $1-$3/barrel more expensive than Brent crude, which is the benchmark for most of the global oil trade. But high oil prices led to a dramatic reversal of the historical trends over the past two years.
?
Increasing US oil production, combined with falling US demand, resulted in a major bottleneck in the nation's most important oil hub in Cushing, Okla. Oil production across regions of the middle of the US flowed into Cushing at a faster pace than it flowed out, and the result was a mini-glut of oil centered on Cushing.?

Because of insufficient pipeline capacity to get mid-continent oil to the Gulf Coast where it could benefit from global markets, the price of WTI became depressed relative to Brent. Brent suddenly began to trade at a premium to WTI, and in 2011 this differential increased to above $25 per barrel.?

The substantial increase in the Brent-WTI differential created profitable opportunities for certain refiners. While some refineries on the East Coast were closing due to lack of profitability, other refiners could access the disadvantaged mid-continent crude and sell the finished products to coastal markets at prices that were more reflective of Brent crude. As WTI prices softened in 2012, refiners like Valero (NYSE: VLO) and Tesoro Corp. (NYSE: TSO) saw their share prices increase by 62 percent and 89 percent respectively. Western Refining (NYSE: WNR), possibly the company best positioned to benefit from the Brent-WTI differential, saw its share price more than double in 2012.

Yet the high Brent-WTI differential will not last, and this will create opportunities ? and some threats ? for investors. The differential will return to historical norms; only the timing is uncertain. (Commodity traders could effectively take advantage of a return to historical norms by implementing various spread strategies).?

The differential should begin to subside this year because there are a number of projects in the pipeline that will relieve the bottleneck in Cushing. Last year Seaway Crude Pipeline Company ? a 50/50 joint venture between Enterprise and Enbridge ? reversed the flow direction of the Seaway Pipeline. This allowed the transport of 150,000 barrels per day {b.p.d.) of crude oil from Cushing to Gulf Coast refineries near Houston. This month the capacity of the Seaway pipeline will be increased by 250,000 b.p.d.?

Later this year the southern leg of Keystone ? which President Obama endorsed from the campaign trail in 2012 and which should not be confused with the proposed Keystone XL ? should come onstream. This Keystone-Cushing extension will have the initial capacity to transport 700,000 b.p.d. of oil from Cushing to Gulf Coast refineries. These three projects have a total capacity of 1.1 million b.p.d., which amounts to most of the increase in US oil production capacity over the past three years.

The most obvious beneficiaries of these pipeline expansions are the pipeline companies themselves and crude oil producers with the newfound ability to get their crude to the global market. The potential losers in this scenario are the refineries that currently benefit from the Brent-WTI differential, and railway companies that have benefited from moving crude oil out of areas like North Dakota's Bakken Formation. Last year the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that year over year deliveries of petroleum by rail?had increased by 38 percent. The largest mover of that crude oil was BNSF. Canadian Pacific Railway (NYSE:CP) also transports Bakken crude and benefits from the current system, and?Phillips 66 just announced?a five-year agreement to deliver crude oil from the Bakken to a New Jersey refinery by rail.?

The railways and refineries will not suffer immediately from the pipeline expansions. But the 1.1 million b.p.d. increase of crude oil transport by pipeline from Cushing ? and the inevitable narrowing of the Brent-WTI differential ? will cut into their profits unless oil production capacity catches back up. Thus, it would be prudent to keep close tabs on companies in these categories ? especially as the Keystone-Cushing extension approaches completion.

COMPUTER CHESS ? Hammer to Nail

(Computer Chess world premiered in the NEXT Section of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize. Its next stop is the Berlin International Film Festival. Visit the film?s totally awesome official website to learn more.)

In 1984 Barry Salt, a rather obscure British film theorist, published a book called Film Style And Technology. In the book, Salt did statistical analysis of key films from each major period of film style history. His basic thesis is that film technology shapes style and aesthetics. The most obvious example is how film grammar changed once sound was introduced. The camera became less mobile due to the early microphones and mixers being bulky, which also prevented location shoots. Stories also became dialogue driven and acting became more voice dependent. So each period has a distinctive feel stylistically due to the particular technological advances of that time. Thus, if you want to make a true period film, one that really feels it is of the past, you would have to draw inspiration from more than just the props, haircuts and wardrobe of that period. Recently, watching a film print of Three Days of the Condor, I realized it felt so uniquely ?seventies? because the lenses, film stock, ratio of wide shots to tight, and general editing pace were all unusual compared to modern films. It succeeded as a total immersion into the distant past in a way that modern period films rarely do.

Andrew Bujaski?s Computer Chess was my favorite of the 28 films I saw at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. It is a complete and utter cinematic experience, in large part due to it being shot on the Sony AVC 3260, a ?70s-era tethered video tube camera. The camera first hit the market in the late ?60s and was designed as a lightweight portable camera for both professionals and amateurs. Its shallow focus, low contrast black-and-white image looks at first like modern security camera footage, but the Sony has a zoom lens that allows for a wide variety of framings, which provides a varied depth of field from shot to shot and this is in part what defines its most unique trait. Computer Chess features both tightly composed shots of heads bent over computer screens in a crowded room and long empty shots of a man dancing down a long hotel hallway. The camera itself is tethered to a recording box and then the film?s tech team was also simultaneously digitizing the image. This made the camera extremely bulky and immobile. Consequently, inside crowded rooms, the camera does not glide or dance with the actors like it does in modern films. The shots are often static and frames are often angled in such a way that it feels as if we don?t have unlimited access to these strange characters and their often obtuse arguments. The quality of the image could be called crude by comparison to today?s high resolution, high contrast, hypersensitive focus control cameras, but nevertheless, its unique vibe is both disorientating and transporting.

Bujalski?s film tells the story of a group of cutting edge computer geeks who gather in a Texas hotel for a computer chess tournament in the early 1980s. The team whose computer wins will face off in the final match for the ultimate man vs computer challenge, reminiscent of the actual Garry Kasparov chess challenges. There are an assortment of computer types with weird haircuts and unhip period clothes verbally sparring with each other about tech problems as well as larger esoteric questions regarding their own individual computers idiosyncrasies. Also in the hotel for the weekend is a marriage encounter couples therapy group who sit in a circle attempting to better understand their partners? and their own frustrations.

The couples? open eagerness to engage each other verbally about feelings is in stark contrast to the computer dweebs, who seem to each be stuck in some state of pre-adolescent, pre-verbal bubble. The contrast between these two groups is often mined for hilarious laughs, such as when one of the couples tries to seduce the youngest member of the computer tribe by getting him to ?open up? about his feelings and urges while rubbing his neck.

The dislocation caused by the physical aspects of the production, the weird haircuts, lingo, clothes and the black-and-white imagery transport you to a world that for sure existed but has never really been explored on the big screen with such texture. Unlike other films of this period, Computer Chess doesn?t attempt to evoke warm fuzzy nostalgic feelings of a bygone era; instead, it uses the dislocation generated by the video image to cause us to be hyper-aware of how different the world was in the past from how it is now. Bujalski depicts an innocent computer age when the excitement of technology was driven by a pure pursuit of exploration, rather than the pursuit of application value. At one point a programmer says the future of computers is in dating and we are reminded that there was a time when computer science had yet to be fully co-opted by the corporate consumer driven mentality that currently fuels the dreams of young tech geniuses.

The theme of Man versus Computer is in itself a quaint concept because it was driven by a now dated fear of technology. There were initially fears that computers could be used to create mass destruction or that man?s basic humanity would be somehow compromised by a HAL type computer logic. The film has a sad eve of destruction vibe to it; at times, it reminded me of another Texas indie film, Eagle Pennell?s Last Night At The Alamo, which was also about a group of people getting together for one last night before their world was changed (in this case, the closing of an old tavern). Likewise, Computer Chess depicts life on the cusp before the computers won. Today there are barely any skeptical voices who speak out against the evils of technology. Jaron Lanier?s book You Are Not A Gadget as well as J?rgen Habermas?s screeds against the internet are the lone articulations of this position. Computer Chess, though, is a comedy and it can be simply enjoyed as a nostalgic romp. But if you start to really explore your own insecurities about some of the conflicts that arise throughout the film?s weekend, you may be surprised how deep its tech themes really run. It?s an extremely entertaining low-tech cinematic breakdown of our modern high-tech world.

Iranian workers demand South Korea 'return' funds

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? About 1,000 Iranian workers have staged a protest rally in front of the South Korean Embassy in Tehran demanding the return of $70 million allegedly held by Seoul after a collapsed business deal.

Employees of Iran's Entekhab Industrial Group claim South Korea has blocked a refund of the money after a failed bid in 2010 to buy Daewoo Electronics, a former subsidiary of the now-defunct Daewoo Group.

Iranians believe the deal was called off because of South Korean worries over mounting international sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

"Return our money," the protesters shouted Sunday in the third such rally in recent months.

Daewoo officials were not immediately available for comment.

Entekhab produces home appliances in Isfahan, about 300 kilometers (180 miles) south of Tehran.

'Barrier of bodies' trapped Brazil fire victims

SANTA MARIA, Brazil (AP) ? A fast-moving fire roared through a crowded, windowless nightclub in southern Brazil early Sunday, filling the air in seconds with flames and a thick, toxic smoke that killed more than 230 panicked partygoers, many of whom were caught in a stampede to escape.

Inspectors believe the blaze began when a band's small pyrotechnics show ignited foam sound insulating material on the ceiling, releasing a putrid haze that caused scores of university students to choke to death. Most victims died from smoke inhalation rather than burns in what appeared to be the world's deadliest nightclub fire in more than a decade.

Survivors and the police inspector Marcelo Arigony said security guards briefly tried to block people from exiting the club. Brazilian bars routinely make patrons pay their entire tab at the end of the night before they are allowed to leave.

But Arigony said the guards didn't appear to block fleeing patrons for long. "It was chaotic and it doesn't seem to have been done in bad faith because several security guards also died," he told The Associated Press.

Later, firefighters responding to the blaze initially had trouble getting inside the Kiss nightclub because "there was a barrier of bodies blocking the entrance," Guido Pedroso Melo, commander of the city's fire department, told the O Globo newspaper.

Authorities said band members who were on the stage when the fire broke out later talked with police and confirmed they used pyrotechnics during their show.

Police inspector Sandro Meinerz, who coordinated the investigation at the nightclub, said one band member died after escaping because he returned inside the burning building to save his accordion. The other band members escaped alive because they were the first to notice the fire.

"It was terrible inside ? it was like one of those films of the Holocaust, bodies piled atop one another," said Meinerz. "We had to use trucks to remove them. It took about six hours to take the bodies away."

Television images from Santa Maria, a university city of about 260,000 people, showed black smoke billowing out of the Kiss nightclub as shirtless young men who attended the university party joined firefighters using axes and sledgehammers to pound at the hot-pink exterior walls, trying to reach those trapped inside.

Bodies of the dead and injured were strewn in the street and panicked screams filled the air as medics tried to help. There was little to be done; officials said most of those who died were suffocated by smoke within minutes.

Within hours a community gym was a horror scene, with body after body lined up on the floor, partially covered with black plastic as family members identified kin.

Outside the gym police held up personal objects ? a black purse, a blue high-heeled shoe ? as people seeking information on loved ones crowded around, hoping not to recognize anything being shown them.

Teenagers sprinted from the scene after the fire began, desperately seeking help. Others carried injured and burned friends away in their arms. Many of the victims were under 20 years old, including some minors. About half of those killed were men, about half women.

The party was organized by students from several academic departments from the Federal University of Santa Maria. Such organized university parties are common throughout Brazil.

"There was so much smoke and fire, it was complete panic, and it took a long time for people to get out, there were so many dead," survivor Luana Santos Silva told the Globo TV network.

The fire spread so fast inside the packed club that firefighters and ambulances could do little to stop it, Silva said.

Another survivor, Michele Pereira, told the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper that she was near the stage when members of the band lit some sort of flare that started the conflagration.

"The band that was onstage began to use flares and, suddenly, they stopped the show and pointed them upward," she said. "At that point, the ceiling caught fire. It was really weak, but in a matter of seconds it spread."

Guitarist Rodrigo Martins told Radio Gaucha that the band, Gurizada Fandangueira, started playing at 2:15 a.m. "and we had played around five songs when I looked up and noticed the roof was burning."

"It might have happened because of the Sputnik, the machine we use to create a luminous effect with sparks. It's harmless, we never had any trouble with it," he said. "When the fire started, a guard passed us a fire extinguisher, the singer tried to use it but it wasn't working."

He confirmed that accordion player Danilo Jacques, 28, died, while the five other members made it out safely.

Police Maj. Cleberson Braida Bastianello said by telephone that the toll had risen to 233 with the death of a hospitalized victim. He said earlier that the death toll was likely made worse because the nightclub appeared to have just one exit through which patrons could exit.

Officials earlier counted 232 bodies that had been brought for identification to a gymnasium in Santa Maria, which is located at the southern tip of Brazil, near the borders with Argentina and Uruguay.

Federal Health Minister Alexandre Padhilha told a news conference that most of the 117 people treated in hospitals had been poisoned by gases they breathed during the fire. Only a few suffered serious burns, he said.

Brazil President Dilma Rousseff arrived to visit the injured after cutting short her trip to a Latin American-European summit in Chile.

"It is a tragedy for all of us," Rousseff said.

Most of the dead apparently were asphyxiated, according to Dr. Paulo Afonso Beltrame, a professor at the medical school of the Federal University of Santa Maria who went to the city's Caridade Hospital to help victims.

Beltrame said he was told the club had been filled far beyond its capacity.

Survivors, police and firefighters gave the same account of a band member setting the ceiling's soundproofing ablaze, he said.

"Large amounts of toxic smoke quickly filled the room, and I would say that at least 90 percent of the victims died of asphyxiation," Beltrame told the AP.

"The toxic smoke made people lose their sense of direction so they were unable to find their way to the exit. At least 50 bodies were found inside a bathroom. Apparently they confused the bathroom door with the exit door."

In the hospital, the doctor "saw desperate friends and relatives walking and running down the corridors looking for information," he said, calling it "one of the saddest scenes I have ever witnessed."

Rodrigo Moura, identified by the newspaper Diario de Santa Maria as a security guard at the club, said it was at its maximum capacity of between 1,000 and 2,000, and partygoers were pushing and shoving to escape.

Santa Maria Mayor Cezar Schirmer declared a 30-day mourning period, and Tarso Genro, the governor of the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, said officials were investigating the cause of the disaster.

The blaze was the deadliest in Brazil since at least 1961, when a fire that swept through a circus killed 503 people in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro.

Sunday's fire also appeared to be the worst at a nightclub since December 2000, when a welding accident reportedly set off a fire at a club in Luoyang, China, killing 309.

In 2004, at least 194 people died in a fire at an overcrowded nightclub in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Seven members of a band were sentenced to prison for starting the flames.

A blaze at the Lame Horse nightclub in Perm, Russia, killed 152 people in December 2009 after an indoor fireworks display ignited a plastic ceiling decorated with branches.

Similar circumstances led to a 2003 nightclub fire that killed 100 people in the United States. Pyrotechnics used as a stage prop by the 1980s rock band Great White set ablaze cheap soundproofing foam on the walls and ceiling of a Rhode Island music venue.

The band performing in Santa Maria, Gurizada Fandangueira, plays a driving mixture of local Brazilian country music styles. Guitarist Martin told Radio Gaucha the musicians are already seeing hostile messages.

"People on the social networks are saying we have to pay for what happened," he said. "I'm afraid there could be retaliation".

Telecom Italia not looking to expand in Latin America: chairman

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Telecom Italia is not looking to expand in Latin America, but the company does need to strengthen its infrastructure due to growing regional data traffic, chairman Franco Bernabe said on Saturday.

"We don't foresee expanding our footprint in the region. We are very conservative on investments," Bernabe told Reuters in an interview during a summit of Latin American and European business leaders in the Chilean capital Santiago.

"The kind of investments we make are investments that strengthen the competitiveness of the companies where we already have investments, and where we have potential for growth," he said.

Telecom Italia, which indirectly controls Telecom Argentina SA , has been boosting investments in its existing operations in Brazil and Argentina.

"Data traffic is picking up everywhere in the region and we need to make our infrastructure much more solid everywhere in order to accommodate for this growth in traffic," Bernabe said.

The company's operations in the region are set to benefit from Latin America's relative economic health and resilience to the global slowdown, he said.

"Quite surprisingly in the middle of the financial crisis many Latin American countries were relatively unaffected with a fairly solid financial system, with fairly well-balanced budgets and therefore in a position to improve ... their relative position in the world economic scene," Bernabe said.

He added that Telecom Italia is "not part of the process that Vivendi has launched" to sell its Brazilian broadband company GVT SA.

Telecom Italia, which already owns Brazil's second-largest mobile operator TIM Participacoes but has a small market share in broadband, has not presented an offer as the price tag is too high.

Recipe: Winter Pasta with Cabbage | Good Food

This weekend on the Market Report, Laura Avery interviews Amelia Saltsman, author of the Santa Monica Farmer?s Market Cookbook. She suggests this heart-warming and budget friendly pasta that utilizes winter cabbage. When selecting cabbage at the market Amelia looks for heads that are heavy for their size. She likes either Savoy cabbage or heirloom Wakefield Jersey cabbage for this preparation. The key is cutting the leaves very thin so they melt into a creamy sauce. You can easily make this vegetarian by taking out the bacon and using vegetable stock or water.

Winter Pasta with Cabbage and Bacon or Not

Makes 4 to 6 servings

Choose cabbages that are heavy for their size. Common heading cabbage, bumpy-leafed Savoy cabbage, and cone-shaped heirloom Wakefield Jersey cabbage are all good choices for this cozy winter pasta meal. Cured or smoked pork pairs well with cabbage, but you can skip it for a satisfying vegetarian dish. This topping is also delicious over polenta or other cooked grains.

?

1 2-pound green cabbage

? to ? pound diced pancetta, slab bacon, or ham

1 onion, chopped, OR?1 bunch green garlic, cut crosswise into small pieces

1/2 to 1 cup stock or water

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

? pound pasta, such as garganelli or penne

? cup or so freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese

Kosher or sea salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

?

Quarter and core the cabbage. Shred the cabbage as you would for coleslaw. If desired, cook the cabbage in boiling salted water for 3 minutes and drain. (This will help it melt faster in the next step, and will also remove any sharp ?cabbage-y? flavors, which really shouldn?t be an issue at this time of the year and if your cabbage is very fresh.)

?

In a wide pot large enough to hold all the ingredients, brown the pork product of your choice in a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat, about 5 minutes. Remove the meat to a bowl. Pour off excess fat if you?ve got more than a tablespoon or two in the pot. Add onion or green garlic and cook until softened, 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally to scrape up any brown bits. Stir in cabbage and ? cup stock or water. Cover pot, reduce heat to medium-low and cook until the cabbage reaches desired tenderness, about 20 minutes for tender but holding its shape and about 45 minutes to almost dissolving. Stir occasionally during cooking time, reducing heat and adding stock or water as needed if the mixture starts to stick. Return meat to the pot.

?

Cook pasta in generously salted boiling water. Drain noodles, reserving about half a cup of starchy pasta cooking water. Add noodles and a little of the pasta water to the sauce and cook over medium heat to thicken and blend flavors. Stir in cheese. Season with salt and pepper as needed.

? 2013, Amelia Saltsman.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? With a world title and an Olympic silver medal of their own already, Meryl Davis and Charlie White were quite happy to share this latest accomplishment.

Davis and White won their fifth straight ice dance crown at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Saturday, matching a record held by four other couples. As the audience stood and cheered, Davis knelt close to the ice for several seconds, her head bowed.

"Being in such an elite group of American ice dancers from the past and seeing that we belong with them, it's special," White said. "All the hard work and our families and their dedication, our support group ? you need a lot of things to come together to make that happen, including staying healthy. There are a lot of little things. I'm proud of us for being able to stick with it, and our continuing love for the sport has helped a lot.

"I'm pleased and I couldn't be more proud."

Judy Schwomeyer and James Sladky (1968-72); Judy Blumberg and Michael Seibert (1981-85); Naomi Lang and Peter Tchernyshev (1999-2003); and Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto (2004-2008) also won five straight titles.

Elizabeth Punsalan and Jerod Swallow also won five, but not in consecutive years.

The Olympic silver medalists and 2011 world champions had had such a big lead after the short dance they had to do little more but step on the ice to win. But they did so much more than that with their dramatic and powerful routine to "Notre Dame de Paris," setting personal bests for both overall score (197.44 points) and free dance (118.42).

They finished more than 20 points ahead ? yes, you read that right ? of Madison Chock and Evan Bates (175.91). Maia and Alex Shibutani were docked a point for an extended lift and finished third (174.21).

Earlier Saturday, Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir overcame a big mistake to win their first pairs title.

"Coming to the U.S. Championships is a good time and there's always a positive energy," Davis said. "It's such an honor to come here. I think being able to perform really well pushes us to put out a better performance, and we are honored to get the results that we did."

For generations, Americans weren't even an afterthought in ice dance. They were so far below the world powerhouses it's a good bet the Russians and British didn't even know their names.

But that has changed in the last 10 years, and Davis and White now set the standard in the sport. Their rivalry with Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir is the best thing going, with the training partners playing a game of "Can you top this?" Virtue and Moir edged the Americans at the Vancouver Olympics, as well as at the 2010 and 2012 world championships. The Americans won the world title in 2011, as well as the last four Grand Prix finals.

Though they have no peers in the United States, that doesn't mean they coast when they come to nationals.

Far from it.

"That energy only pushes us and makes us feel even more excited," Davis said.

Their performance was spellbinding, so intense no one in the arena dared breathe. Every inch of the ice, every nuance of music was filled with intricate and elegant moves, one more difficult than the next. Their skating skills have always been superb, their edge quality so fine that coaches pop in DVDs of them to show their students.

But it is the way they combine the athletic strengths with the beauty and elegance of a dance that makes them so breathtaking. They are a sporting event and a theater show rolled into one. Their lifts can barely be described they were so intricate and innovative. In one, White twirled Davis like a rifle and whipped her from his front to back all while skating and turning at full speed.

They oozed emotion, using the tips of their eyelashes all the way down to the toes of their feet to express the character of the dance, and the audience was as exhausted as Davis and White when they finished.

Chock and Bates and the Shibutanis have the misfortune of trying to compete with that, and there was no way they could come close. At least, not now.

Chock and Bates' lifts are filled with unique positions, and they were done with great speed and control. But it was the love story they displayed to "Dr. Zhivago" that was so delightful. Close your eyes, and you could almost see the horses and the sleigh in the falling snow.

"It's been such a great season," Chock said. "We have been working very hard, and we hope to keep getting better and better from here."

The Shibutanis' routine to "Memoirs of a Geisha" was seamless, the elements flowing from one to the other so perfectly it was impossible to tell where one ended and the next began. The siblings opened with a pairs spin that was better than anything seen during the actual pairs competition earlier in the afternoon, and it lasted for what seemed like forever ? no easy feat to maintain that speed and momentum.

Their twizzles ? traveling spins ? are, simply, exquisite. They are done in perfect unison, right down to the raising of their arms while they spin. Their big flaw was that he held his sister too long on a lift, a mistake they also made in the short dance.
