Another night of unrest brought hundreds of police who closed down roads and stopped buses from running.
Demonstrators threw bricks and bottles at the police who had been called following scuffles at Belfast City Hall over a raised Union flag, which only flies 18 days each year, including royal birthdays.
The pro-British unionists took to the streets, forcing Belfast police to use plastic bullets as well as water cannon.
There have recently been fears that tensions between Unionists and Republicans will turn into armed and bloody clashes.
Police recently found armour-piercing mortars amongst weapons at a Republican IRA camp in Derry.
There have been continuing riots in Belfast streets since December 3rd when 1,000 pro-British loyalists started the so-called flag riots.
During the riot, some of those attending used petrol bombs and guns to intimidate the police.
The province has been moving toward renewed conflicts which will shatter a 1998 peace deal.
Prior to the deal, Catholic Irish nationalists seeking independence had been clashing for 30 years with Protestant loyalists determined to remain part of Britain.
