Creating a time capsule is a fantastic way to store memories and events for either an older you, or for future generations. You can do it alone, or get the whole family involved on a rainy weekend!
Time capsules are interesting to people of all ages and touch people on a world-wide scale. Time capsules preserve the features of our history and can serve as valuable reminders of one generation for another.
How Do You Start to create a Time Capsule?
Decide on a retrieval date.?Between 10 ? 100 years in the future, for example. Keep in mind that creating a capsule for unveiling at some future date is really a two sided adventure that involves both you and those who will retrieve it. Consider carefully what items you select, so they will add the element of surprise and discovery for those who open your time capsule.
Think about where you?re going to hide it. If you put it in the basement or loft in a safe place, write a note to yourself, so you remember where it is!
If you choose a short period of time like 10 years, you can use a long piece of pvc piping from your local hardware store. They have caps for the ends and you can also buy plastic spray paint in various colors if you want to decorate it.
You can also use ribbons, stickers, sharpie pens etc to decorate the whole pipe.
You could bury your capsule for 50 years or more, but if you?re going to do this then you?ll need a waterproof container, like a small waterproof safe for example.

Plaque ? if you decide to bury it
Location ? where will you bury it?
Epoxy Glue ? if you?re going to bury it.
The most exciting part comes next! Create your time capsule album using digital scrapbook pages. Here are some ideas of what to include in your capsule.
- Family photographs, include the names of everybody and note the dates they were taken Get everyone to sign their own picture
- Your current home, a picture of your house and neighbourhood.
- Photographs of the cars you have, with memories about those cars.
- Photos of pets, schools, and remember to write down any special memories.
- Photos of special family events, silly things like where you shop, where you buy gas, the prices. Include some receipts.
- Hobbies, what are your children into? Do they collect stickers or cards?
- Favourite restaurants, pictures ? location, prices ? get a menu if you can! List your favorite foods there.
- Movies of the time, music of the time
- Candy bar wrappers
- Postage stamps
- Fashion trends, magazine clippings
- News headlines
- Unusual weather events
- A few coins
- A letter to your younger self (if you?re planning on retrieving it yourself. If not, a letter for the person who retrieves it)
- CD (who knows if it will be able to play) include a means to access it
- Sealable polyethylene bags
- Items that document your everyday life
- Current events
- Friends and family can contribute items
Create your digital scrapbook album. Maybe you?d like to use a background that includes clocks or a seasonal theme. You can find some very creative digi packs here Print your pages out and make an album. Seal your album in a polyethylene bag. Seal all your other items in separate bags.
Have a sealing ceremony with friends and family!
Then, remember to register your capsule with the International time capsule society (yes there is such a place) The International Time Capsule Society (ITCS) was established in 1990 to promote the careful study of time capsules. It strives to document all types of time capsules throughout the world!
