NASCAR 2012 MyRaceCarDrivers on With the Old, And In With the ...

Entering his 37th season, the 16-time NASCAR Most Popular Driver Award winner and 1988 Winston Cup Champion, Bill Elliott unveiled his new car for Turner Motorsports, a blue #50 Wal-Mart sponsored machine he will drive at the Coke Zero 400. "It has been kind of an old-school, new-school kind of week, hasn't it?" said Elliott, about to embark on his 37th season and the owner of a past champion's provisional. "Y'all have been talking to old guys like me, young guys like [16-year-old son] Chase, and just, well, just a lot of old and new stuff all at once." As far as Famous Race Car Drivers go, familiar faces are going to stick around. Jeff Gordon is said to be doing better than ever since the Sprint sponsorship of the cup, Jimmie Johnson is ?pissed off? and watching the throne, Tony Stewart has got an overhauled team with a new crew chief promising a better beginning, and Kurt Busch is going to reinvent himself toward a rebirth, hence the signing with Phoenix Race.

There are still fires from these old ashes from these famous race car drivers.

But the new season of NASCAR promises a new generation of my race car drivers. Newly-signed to Roush-Fenway Racing, 21-year old Trevor Bayne, the surprise winner of the 2011 Daytona 500 as well as Nationwide-series prodigy 24-year old Ricky Stenhouse Jr. continue to show promise and progress as they rise the ranks with the Sprint Cup in their sights. Also entering the conversation, check out Danica Patrick?Not like you already were anyway. She?s doing the NASCAR thing full-time in between provocative GoDaddy ads. And Austin Dillon for some reason is going to be the first driver rocking the #3 since that tragic Daytona accident claiming the life of Dale Earnhardt Sr.

The 2012 NASCAR season promises to be a blend of both worlds. "I think Trevor Bayne was a huge wake-up call for us," admitted Steve Phelps, NASCAR chief marketing officer. "He won our biggest race last year and fans knew nothing about him. Neither did sponsors. Candidly, neither did us. Luckily we had a media blitz that week that showcased Trevor, but it made us realize that we need to start planting the seeds and educating people about these young drivers early." NASCAR is aware of this new breed of famous race car drivers. And they embrace every second of it.

Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR VP of racing operations puts it, "If they make a fan early, then they have a fan for life. That's how the drivers in this Hall of Fame became Hall of Famers. When today's young racers do start moving up that ladder, we need to give them the kind of stage and fan base they deserve."
