MBJH students to showcase art | Village Living

The annual Art Forms Showcase sponsored by the MBJH PTO and several local businesses will be held on Friday, Feb. 24 at the Fine Arts Center located on the Mountain Brook High School campus. ?The public is invited to attend. ?

Overall winners for the Art Forms showcase were Bill Perry (Performing Arts), Kelley Jiang (Visual Arts) and Avi Goldsmith (Literary Arts).

The evening begins with a 6 p.m. reception, followed by a DVD compilation of winning visual arts entries, and then culminates with the showcase beginning at 7 p.m. Selected students in grades 7-9 will perform and the event will be emceed by sophomore Jack Royer.

Prior to the showcase, more than 100 entries were judged by local professionals in three major categories: ?Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Literary Arts. ?Visual and Literary Arts entries are judged without names on the work and Performing Arts judges are confirmed to have no familiarity with competing students. ?Additionally, a logo contest was held with the winning design featured on the Art Forms 2012 T shirts, showcase programs and posters. ?Caroline Moore, ninth grade, won the logo contest by popular vote of the students. ?

In Visual Arts, first through third places were awarded by grade with an overall winner announced. Student choice awards were also selected for the Visual Arts category:

Seventh grade: Henry Barze,

Eighth grade: Callie Wilson

Ninth grade: Kelley Jiang

The Best Overall Visual Arts Winner was Kelley Jiang, ninth grade, for her acrylic painting of an evening street scene.

In Literary Arts, three categories were judged: ?poetry, essay and short fiction.? First through third places were awarded in each category along with an overall winner, Avi Goldsmith, for her short fiction work.

In ?Performing Arts, students were selected to perform in the 2012 Art Forms Showcase with top scoring performers receiving 1st through 3rd places by grade and an overall winner announced, Bill Perry, for his piano performance.

This year, several local business sponsored the MBJH Art Forms contest and make the Showcase possible: ?Seale Harris Clinic, Phillips and Todd, A?Mano, Books-a-Million, Sally Bergquist, realtor, and Stephen Greene, attorney at law.
